Among the developer’s long history of boss fights, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has chosen a unique Demon’s Souls foe as his favorite. From Dark Souls to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the studio’s various “soulsborne” titles are known for their unforgiving difficulty and truly epic boss encounters. While the newest FromSoftware title will be an open-world experience, Elden Ring bosses and minibosses appear to carry on the developer’s tradition of unrelenting duels.

As the game that kicked off the soulsborne genre, Demon’s Souls provides players with a whole host of monstrous bosses to overcome. Many of the enemies in this early title tend possess a unique mechanic or gimmick, allowing players to more easily defeat them once they discover the quirk. The iconic Tower Knight, for example, can be weakened at the knee and then struck by a devastating attack to the head. Meanwhile, the blind Old Hero tracks their enemies through sound, which can give careful and quiet players an easy advantage in combat. While some players compare Elden Ring bosses to Dark Souls’ greatest hits, both games have merely built upon the solid foundation laid by Demon’s Souls.

Reflecting the creativity evident in the classic title, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki recently told PlayStation Blog that his favorite soulsborne boss comes from Demon’s Souls. The fantasy ARPG’s Old Monk boss, specifically, is beloved by Miyazaki due to how accurately it was able to capture his initial vision. The innovative enemy can actually summon a real human player to defend itself from the player, creating a truly unique multiplayer boss experience. Apparently Miyazaki received a lot of pushback while developing the complicated battle, but the results were extremely memorable.

Continuing to push the envelope, FromSoftware’s upcoming Elden Ring will bring classic soulsborne gameplay into an open-world environment. While more traditional arenas will also be featured, Elden Ring enemies and bosses will also be encountered roaming the fantasy world of The Lands Between. One particularly terrifying boss, Flying Dragon Agheel, will swoop down from the sky to ambush players as enter an open field. The title’s recent closed-network test also featured other open-world bosses, such as the Tree Sentinel, which could be approached from any angle or outright avoided at the player’s leisure.

Hidetaka Miyazaki has led the creation of many soulsborne bosses, with each one providing original challenges for fans to overcome. However, the Old Monk from Demon’s Souls injects the game’s multiplayer component into a typical boss fight in order to create a truly fascinating encounter. With Elden Ring set to release on February 25, time will tell whether FromSoftware can surpass the creativity and innovation of the Old Monk.
