Bungie has much planned for Destiny 2′s next two years. Rather than make a Destiny 3, Bungie will launch three major Destiny 2 expansions by the end of 2022, beginning with 2020’s Beyond Light. The game’s future is a lot to take in, but Bungie has already broken things down with a wider scope than it typically has in the past.

Back when it announced Destiny 2: Beyond Light, Bungie also detailed two more coming expansions and said there are no plans for a Destiny 3. At the time, a Bungie community manager said the developer believed “it was a mistake to create a situation that fractured the community” by launching Destiny 2 instead of continuing to add to the content and player base already present in the first game. To prevent this from happening again, Bungie will begin to “vault” old Destiny 2 content, taking some destinations and activities offline and rotating others back into the live game on a yearly basis.

As old content goes away, new content will arrive to take its place. That starts with Beyond Light, but Bungie has also announced plans for later content. Here’s every Destiny 2 expansion known about so far.

Every Destiny 2 Expansion & Update Bungie Has Announced So Far

Destiny 2: Beyond Light – November 2020

Following Destiny 2‘s current Season of Arrivals, the recently delayed Beyond Light expansion will arrive on November 10, 2020. It introduces a new destination – Europa, a frozen moon of Jupiter – and a new subclass for every Guardian. Players will finally gain control of the Darkness to wield the new Stasis subclasses, which feature an icy theme. That also means obtaining Stasis weapons and battling Stasis-powered enemies. Players will experience the next chapter in Destiny 2′s story and embark on a new Raid into the mysterious Deep Stone Crypt, the birthplace of the robotic Exo.

Little is known about the next two expansions, but their titles and the current direction of Destiny 2′s story give fans a good idea of what they’ll involve. 2021’s expansion title, The Witch Queen, suggests it will focus on the Hive’s god-like Savathûn, who poses a great threat to humanity in the power vacuum left by Oryx’s defeat in Destiny: The Taken King.

Destiny 2: Lightfall – TBA 2022

The artwork for 2022’s expansion, Lightfall, prominently features one of the Darkness’ Pyramid ships. According to Bungie, the coming “trilogy of expansions” center around an exploration of “the true nature of Light and Dark.” Between that, the ship, and a name like Lightfall, 2022’s expansion seems likely to be Destiny 2‘s last. There are plenty of theories about what Lightfall could mean for Destiny 2‘s future, including the death of players’ Guardians, a second Collapse, a full-on reset, or the launch of Destiny 3. Regardless of the exact outcome, it’s safe to say Bungie will have to make big changes to the Destiny franchise to keep it relevant by the end of 2022, whether that means rebooting it, producing a sequel, or ending it altogether.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light will release for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 10, 2020.
