Zulmak is the final encounter of the Pit of Heresy dungeon in Destiny 2, and knowing how to beat him will make earning the final rewards easier. Zulmak, Instrument of Torment is a large Hive Knight that is capable of wiping Fireteams in a single attack, either through a damaging move or knocking them off the arena. A lot of this fight requires timing and team coordination, as well as making use of the different mechanics in encounters throughout the dungeon.

Defeating Zulmak rewards players with Powerful gear that can only be earned in the Pit of Heresy, like the reissued Moon gear of Destiny 2. While the base gear can be earned in other activities, like the Altars of Sorrow, Shadowkeep campaign, and Lecturn of Enchantment Quests, the Pit of Heresy has Moon weapons that drop with unique perks and armor stats. Additionally, only the way to obtain the Premonition Pulse Rifle is by completing the Pit of Heresy.

While the Pit of Heresy is needed to complete the Xenophage Exotic Machine Gun quest, the dungeon itself does not need to be completed to earn the weapon. Defeating Zulmak will not award the weapon, and it cannot be earned in any encounter. Instead, there is a separate questline that needs to be completed in order to find Xenophage in Destiny 2.

How to Beat Zulmak in Destiny 2 – The Pit of Heresy

Zulmak is located in the center of the final encounter arena, but he will be immune to all damage until the mini-bosses are defeated in the surrounding pillars. Defeat the mini-bosses like the others in the first encounter with light attacks, heavy attacks, and reflected attacks against the Knight, Witch, and Shrieker, respectively. Each will drop a Void Orb that needs to be slammed into the small well at the base of each staircase. This will activate the damage phase against Zulmak and, like many other Destiny 2 boss fights, this phase is set on a timer. Near the end of the phase, Zulmak will generate heat by impaling his sword into the platform, and anyone caught in the wave will die instantly. After the wave, the damage phase has to be reset.

Season of the Lost weapons makes defeating Zulmak a bit easier than when the Pit of Heresy originally launched. Equip the Particle Destruction mod to gain bonus damage when using a Fusion Rifle or Linear Fusion Rifle for a short time, stacking up to five times. Use this mod in combination with a powerful super like Thundercrash, Golden Gun, or Nova Bomb and Zulmak will fall easily.
