The latest expansion for Destiny 2 – The Witch Queen gave players a deep dive into Savathun’s lore, bringing more depth to the Hive goddess and her relationship with the Light, and potentially foreshadowing her role as an ally in the upcoming Lightfall expansion. New lore entries provided some exciting hints towards the future of the hit MMO, alluding to the possibility of the King’s Fall raid returning to Destiny 2 at some point in the future. After the events of Beyond Light and The Witch Queen’s story, players may be able to see characters like Savathun and Eramis once again as unlikely allies.

[Warning: Major spoilers for Destiny 2: The Witch Queen below.]

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen ended off with Savathun’s demise at the hands of the players, though her Hive ghost survives. It teleports away with the Traveler, presumably with the help of the being of Light. Savathun’s body is secured by Ikora’s Hidden, which could mean it now resides in the Tower. Beyond Light ends off with Eramis freezing from Stasis after she is defeated by the Guardian, forced to watch the pyramid ship on Europa for eternity. As the future of these villains is still up in the air and the Guardians of Destiny 2 continue to form alliances with characters who would have previously been their enemies – such as the head of the PsiOps activity, Empress Caiatl – the sequel could be gearing towards an Endgame-like event for its next DLC, Lightfall.

Lightfall is set to be one of Destiny 2‘s biggest expansions yet, and will possibly unveil tons of the mysteries behind the Light and the Darkness. That being said, it would make sense for Lightfall to force recent enemies to join the Guardians in a type of “enemy of my enemy is my friend” situation. It was revealed that Savathun herself was manipulated by the Witness which led to the Hive becoming worshippers of the Darkness who would do its bidding. The Darkness and more specifically, Destiny 2‘s The Witness, has been preparing to become an ultimate villain of the Destiny universe, which could lead to many unlikely allies joining the people of the Last City in an attempt to prevent a second Collapse.

Savathun’s Role In Destiny 2: Witch Queen May Hint At Heroic Role

As the story progresses in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, the player uncovers a shocking revelation behind how Savathun has the Light: she was resurrected by the Traveler. It was thought that she had stolen the power, but it was actually granted to her. This could be due to a fact that has been known about the Traveler for centuries. For billions of years, the Traveler has granted its light and prosperity to civilizations across the universe, only for the Darkness to chase it off and wipe out the civilization it had helped. This cycle of life and death continued until the Traveler eventually blessed humanity, where it presumably sacrificed itself and sent out the Ghosts to create the Guardians.

The Traveler could have wanted Savathun’s protection from the Darkness by being bound to her Throne World as seen in The Witch Queen. The Traveler is known to leave planets when the situation spirals out of control. Victims of its abandonment can be seen in the Eliksni race, also known as the Fallen. During the final mission of the Witch Queen, it seemed like the Traveler did not try to stop Savathun from entrapping it, implying that it may have wanted Savathun to go forth with her plan. This could mean that although Savathun was a horrific enemy of humanity for centuries, she is somehow allied with the Traveler.

Destiny 2 – Savathun’s Motives Are No Longer Aligned With The Darkness

During Destiny 2‘s Season of the Lost story, it is revealed that Savathun was disguised as the legendary warlock, Osiris. During the events of that season, she uses his body as ransom in exchange for help from Mara Sov to extract the worm inside of her, which fed off of the chaos and destruction she caused across the universe. Destiny antagonists The Hive had basically made a pact with the Darkness-controlled Worm gods who gave the species their larva which fed off of death and conquest. This caused the Hive to essentially work as pawns of the Darkness, and Savathun wanted out. This led to her grand scheme to have her worm removed with the help of the Awoken Queen.

After removing the worm, Mara Sov critically wounded Savathun in an attempt to kill her. The plan worked, though the Hive goddess fled the Dreaming City and headed to the Traveler, where she spoke to it and ultimately died on a mountain just outside the Last City. A ghost known as Immaru was sent by the Traveler to resurrect her, however, granting her the power of the Light. Even after her death at the hands of the Guardian in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen‘s story, Immaru is seemingly saved by the Traveler, meaning, for some unknown reason, it wants Savathun to survive. This could mean that she may return as an ally of the Light sometime later along the line of Destiny 2‘s story.

Destiny 2 Lore Has Shown Savathun Becoming “More Human”

Under the guise of Osiris, Savathun gained more of an understanding of humanity and its culture. This made her more of an emotional being, as well as becoming more human-like psychologically. Whenever a being of the Light is resurrected for the first time, they lose any kind of memory of their past self. The Witch Queen‘s storyline is fairly emotional for Savathun as she has to suddenly remember all of the betrayal and death she had witnessed at the hands of the Darkness in such a short span of time. This could have given her more empathy, seeing her past self as a being who was manipulated by the darkness to wipe out billions of sentient beings across the universe.

There have been plenty of unlikely allies from the Empress Caiatl to the Crow in Destiny 2, though nothing would be more surprising than fighting alongside a Hive goddess. Savathun has proven to be an important character in the Destiny 2 storyline and she may return soon just in time for Lightfall. This time, however, she may be an ally of the Light and could see a redemption arc along the line in Destiny 2.
