In response to persistent outrage in the Destiny 2 community concerning the overpowered Stasis subclasses in PvP, developer Bungie has decided to nerf the damage type ahead of schedule. Stasis nerfs were originally planned alongside the upcoming Season 15 content, but a mid-season patch for the ongoing Season of the Splicer will now address balancing issues with the ice-based subclasses.

Destiny 2 launched in 2017 with three elemental damage types – Solar, Arc, and Void – along with the base Kinetic non-elemental damage. Different damage types provide various boosts and abilities for weapons and Guardian subclasses in the Destiny universe. The release of the Beyond Light expansion last November introduced a new damage type, Stasis, which focuses on freezing and crowd control in PvE. Its effectiveness in PvP has caused controversy in the community, however, as the freezing abilities are considered overpowered relative to other subclasses. Though Bungie has nerfed Stasis in patches since Beyond Light, the damage type has yet to be properly balanced. A new round of nerfs to address player complaints was scheduled for Season 15.

In a blog post on May 27, Bungie announced that it will no longer wait until Season 15 to nerf Stasis in Destiny 2‘s Crucible. Instead, a new round of Stasis nerfs will be pushed out on June 3 as part of Hotfix 3.2.0.3. The changes are extensive and will no doubt mitigate the effectiveness of Stasis in PvP moving forward. For instance, the duration of non-Super freezes on players is dropping to 1.35 seconds, all but eliminating the need to actively break out of them. Bonus damage to players from Heavy weapons, Special weapons, and Light abilities will be reduced from 50% to 5% – a substantial decrease. Stasis Slow will no longer reduce weapon accuracy or suppress aerial moves, and the general movement speed penalty is being diminished.

Aside from nerfs to the Whisper of Hedrons Fragment, Whisper of Rime Fragment, and the reduced effectiveness of the Coldsnap Grenade, all three classes’ Stasis subclasses will be nerfed. Bungie cites the Titan Behemoth’s high mobility as a reason for its OP nature. As such, nerfs to four Titan Stasis abilities, including Shiver Strike, Cryoclasm, Howl of the Storm, and Glacial Quake, will hopefully “make the Behemoth more targetable while moving.” The Hunter Revenant’s Withering Blade and Winter’s Shroud abilities will no longer slow players as long. limiting their capabilities. Finally, Bungie notes that the Warlock Shadebinder’s Penumbral Blast will “require more accuracy vs. players in order to turn this ability into more of a skill shot given its powerful effects.”

Bungie’s readiness to push this patch out early is a sign that, at least in some regards, the studio is listening to its community’s complaints. Unfortunately, Stasis has been unbalanced since it was introduced last year, and prior patches have failed to properly fix the problem. Hopefully this upcoming patch will alleviate some of the OP features of Stasis abilities. Players will have to wait until June 3 to find out, but in the meantime, there’s plenty of PvE content in the Season of the Splicer to keep Destiny 2 fans occupied.

Destiny 2 is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Stadia.
