Upgrade Modules are used to increase the light level of weapons and armor in Destiny 2, allowing players to reach the levels needed for endgame content. Contrary to their name, Upgrade Modules don’t actually upgrade the stats of any weapons or armor. However, they’re still just as important as any other material, because, without Upgrade Modules, players will be prevented from being able to enjoy certain content. Upgrade Modules take a high-level piece of gear, dismantle it, and increase the level of a low-level piece of gear to the original piece’s level.

Technically, Upgrade Modules aren’t the only way players can upgrade their gear. If a Guardian acquires the same weapon or armor of different levels, they can use the higher-level piece to upgrade the lower-level one. This can be done in exchange for 1000 Glimmer, and it does the same thing as Upgrade Modules. However, with Destiny 2‘s strong RNG, it’s impractical to rely solely on receiving a higher-level piece of the same gear. Nevertheless, those rare occasions where it does work out are nice to have.

The five main ways to get Upgrade Modules in Destiny 2 include:

  • Banshee-44 and Ada-1
  • Crucible, Gambit, Vanguard Strikes, and Trials of Osiris Ranks
  • Modularity Ghost Mod
  • Season Pass
  • Concentrated Mattergem

Players should try a variety of these activities to maximize their potential for earning more Upgrade Modules more quickly.

How to Get Upgrade Modules in Destiny 2

Banshee-44 and Ada-1 will be players’ main sources for purchasing Upgrade Modules. Like Enhancement Prisms and Ascendant Shards, Upgrade Modules cost 5,000 Glimmer. Additionally, the Upgrade Modules will cost an Enhancement Core, 25 of a random world material, and 10 Legendary Shards. None of the items mentioned are particularly hard to find, but this method can get pretty costly if every piece of gear needs to be upgraded. Unfortunately, every player runs into a spot where they have to spend resources in order to acquire Upgrade Modules, as it’s impossible to receive above a certain level beyond their own gear. Increasing the light level of all gear increases the overall light level of the Guardian, thus increasing the level of newly acquired gear.

New Vanguard playlist changes in Season 15 of Destiny 2 upgrade its reward system to match that of Gambit and Crucible. This means Upgrade Modules can be earned through all playlists, but in order to reach that point, players must reset their ranks in any or all of the three playlists. This is done after Rank 16 is completed. Additionally, applying the appropriate Modularity Ghost Mod for the appropriate playlist has a chance to award upgrade modules for Crucible wins, Gambit wins, and Strike or Nightfall completions. Trials of Osiris allows players to unlock Upgrade Modules at ranks 4 and 13, but it’s a playlist that can only be accessed on the weekend.

The final methods for getting Upgrade Modules are the Season Pass and Concentrated Mattergems. Both the paid and free Season Passes offer a number of levels that award Upgrade Modules, so leveling the Season Pass as quickly as possible will help players upgrade their gear sooner. Concentrated Mattergems are items purchased in the store for 200 Bright Dust, which can be earned through Additional Bounties in Crucible, Gambit, and Vanguard Strikes. Using a Concentrated Mattergem creates a chance that bosses will drop Upgrade Modules. Bright Dust is also awarded in the Season Pass, and by completing certain Seasonal Challenges.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PlayStation4, PlayStation5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, and Google Stadia platforms.
