Trials of Osiris is one of the most competitive PvP modes in Destiny 2, and it’s getting some major changes in an upcoming overhaul. The mode has been plagued by stingy rewards, cheating, and a high barrier to entry for newer players, and Bungie seems to have heard feedback that these things need to be improved, setting its sights on fixing up the mode with an upcoming overhaul.

Related to the new rules for access to Trials is the new requirement to have the latest expansion of Destiny 2 to even play the game mode. The hope is that this will eliminate the way free accounts have cheated and dodged bans, as Trials of Osiris has had a cheating problem in the past, keeping things fair for everyone, a change that likely makes sense given most players of the mode will have the latest expansions in the first place.

Bungie gave a detailed account of the coming changes in a recent news post, which also explained that Trials will be on hiatus beginning at the start of Season 15 on August 24 until its return on September 10. Highlights for the overhaul include making Trials more accessible, more rewarding, and more engaging. The impending revamp promises to fix numerous systems in Trials that will hopefully appeal to new players and veterans alike, and with these new fixes and the implementation of anti-cheat program BattlEye at the beginning of Season 15, the reduction in cheating should also help make the mode much more popular.

Destiny 2’s Trials Of Osiris Will Get A Host Of Fixes

Trials of Osiris has suffered from low player population compared to other Destiny 2 modes, and Bungie plans to rectify this by lowering the bar to enter. Currently, players need to queue with a fireteam in order to run Trials. With the new version, matchmaking will fill out the rest of the team if players queue up with fewer than three. The requirements for the Trials Access quest have been lowered to facilitate new blood into the mode, lowering the threshold for Valor ranks and kills.

Most Trials of Osiris players aim for flawless runs or getting their three wins and leaving, another issue contributing to low population. More numerous and more easily attainable rewards will attract newer players and hopefully keep them engaged for a longer period. Saint-14 will have a new rewards track akin to his peer Lord Shaxx, as Reputation will be tied to winning rounds instead of winning matches. This will include new Ranks and Reputation as Trials Tokens have been retired. In addition, Passages will no longer record losses and thus players won’t have to reset their Passage after three losses, hopefully giving players more rewards no matter how long they choose to play (though veterans can still push for a perfect record in the chase for the best weapons with the best rolls, as Trials adept weapon rewards will still require going flawless).

Other changes to Destiny 2’s Trials of Osiris to keep player engagement high are things like the round time, emotes, and special/heavy ammo. Round time will be reduced from 120 seconds to 90 seconds to help mitigate stalling for ability energy. Use of emotes in third-person for peeking will be sidestepped by emotes staying in first-person, and swords will not usable unless ammo is available. Also, special and heavy ammo will no longer be carried over between rounds, so one team shouldn’t have a greater advantage.

Trials of Osiris’ long-awaited rework is a major step in the right direction for the future long-term health of the game. Players will get first-hand knowledge when Trials of Osiris returns to Destiny 2 on September 10.
