Devil May Cry director Hideki Kamiya would love the chance to remake the game with modern technology. The first Devil May Cry actually began life as an early version of Resident Evil 4. The story would have focused on twin brothers with superhuman abilities, who were the sons of Umbrella founder Oswell Spencer. The game’s focus on stylish action was seen as too radical a departure from the tone of past Resident Evil games, so Capcom decided to rewrite the story and make a separate franchise out of it.

The Devil May Cry series focuses on the adventures of demon hunter Dante, who is half-demon and half-human, and the games are famous for their outlandish monsters, intense action and tongue-in-cheek tone. The original series ran for 4 games before a well-received reboot dubbed DmC: Devil May Cry arrived in 2013, with a storyline supervised by Alex Garland (Annihilation). The game also spawned an animated series, and while there was some talk of a live-action version from the makers of the Resident Evil movies years ago, that project seems to have stalled.

The first 3 games in the series just received a HD re-release, and now it seems Devil May Cry creator Kamiya would like to revisit the first game. Kamiya took to his Twitter account to proclaim that remaking the first game would be a very good idea:

This isn’t the first time he’s mentioned remaking Devil May Cry either. Toward the beginning of 2018, he mulled the idea of remaking the game, making it less anime inspired and a little more cinematic in approach.

It’s been five years since the last new Devil May Cry game, and while a new game is rumored to be in development, nothing has been announced officially. Maybe the recent HD remasters of the originals have made Kamiya nostalgic for the franchise, and he’s gauging audience interest before taking his idea to Capcom. Fans of the series may not respond well to the idea of a total redesign, but if it’s coming from the original creator, it could be something special.

It should also be noted Kiyama’s first video game as director – 1998’s Resident Evil 2 – is currently being remade by Capcom. A remake of the classic title was highly requested by fans for years, before finally being announced in 2015. No details or images from the remake have been revealed yet, though reports suggest the game will drop the fixed camera of the original, and the game will explore more of Raccoon City before the action moves to the original police station setting.

Perhaps if the Resident Evil 2 remake performs well, Capcom will be interested in giving Devil May Cry a stylish makeover too.
