Based on New York Times bestselling book (by Jeff Lindsay), Showtime’s Dexter sees the protagonist, Dexter Morgan, roaming around the streets of Miami hunting down his prey, while trying to fit in the normal society at the same time, working as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Homicide.

After learning that he cannot make friends in his department, the serial killer has to deal with the aftermath of his wedding. Can Dexter satisfy his dark passenger while dealing with parenting and husband pressures? Without further ado, let’s rank every episode from the fourth outing of the critically acclaimed series, according to IMDb.

12 “Blinded By The Light” (8.3)

The third episode of season 4 drops down in pace thanks to the barbecue scene that it starts off with. Dexter is at his awkward best while talking to the neighbors and one can make out that he is trying very hard to blend in.

Rita is not happy about Dexter lying to her and wants to drive him to work until his concussion heals. Meanwhile, The Vacation Murderer is on the loose, while Trinity might have struck again and Dexter is loving every single minute of it.

11 “Slack Tide” (8.5)

The seventh episode of season 4 sees Dexter getting closer to Arthur, as he continues to lend him a hand for work. Christine is still trying for an interview with Debra, although Dexter just doesn’t want her to be around.

Moreover, a unique crime scene occupies Quinn and Angel, while Debra is all set to move into Dexter’s vacated apartment. Also, she has decided to work her way into the Trinity case, after Lundy left it.

10 “Road Kill” (8.6)

In season 4’s eighth episode, Debra is made to show her findings on the Trinity Killer to LaGuerta. To make matters worse for Dexter, LaGuerta seems to be intrigued.

Furthermore, Dexter isn’t feeling well after killing Jonathan Farrow, who has been confirmed to be innocent of the murders. This means Dexter broke Harry’s code again, only this time, the feeling is unusual. He also takes a road trip with Arthur, which tells the viewers a lot about the Trinity Killer.

9 “Living The Dream” (8.7)

In the first episode of season 4, Dexter has become a family man, but he still has his personal needs. Sleep deprivation is killing Dexter’s concentration as he is juggling his personal, professional, and serial killer lives.

Moreover, Frank Lundy returns in this episode to tell Dexter about a certain man called The Trinity Killer, who has been on the loose for years and has now returned. It’s a really good opening 45 minutes.

8 “Remains To Be Seen” (8.7)

The second episode of season 4 picks up right where the season premiere left off. Dexter has been involved in an accident and although he is all right, he has bigger things to worry about. But with Rita and work on his tail, it seems time is a commodity Dexter doesn’t have these days.

Also, LaGuerta and Angel are still keeping their relationship a secret. As far as Debra is concerned, she is trying to sort out her personal life, especially after Lundy returned out of nowhere.

7 “I Had A Hammer” (8.8)

In the sixth episode of season 4, Dexter tries to learn everything about Arthur’s (The Trinity Killer) schedule but he also has some problems to deal with at home. Debra is upset about a crime scene she could have prevented, while she watches Nikki Wald’s interrogation.

Angel is also about to get transferred but he is happy with it, as that allows him to be with LaGuerta. Elsewhere, Dexter and Rita go to see a marriage therapist.

6 “Dirty Harry” (9.0)

The fifth episode of season 4 deals with the aftermath of the shooting incident. While Lundy is dead, Debra seems to be getting better. Dexter shows his respect towards Lundy, in his own way, by investigating the scene but all he can think about is Debra.

But, Dexter needs to focus on the Trinity killer, who is still on the loose. First, he needs some evidence and he breaks into Lundy’s apartment to find it.

5 “Dex Takes A Holiday” (9.2)

While the third episode of season 4 was a bit of a downer, the fourth one is absolutely breathtaking. For one, Dexter is chasing a dangerous killer who works for the police department and goes by the name of Zoey Kruger, after Rita takes the kids on a holiday for three days.

Also, Lundy seems to be getting closer to Trinity and his personal affection towards Debra is there for all to see. This episode ends in an incredible fashion, as both Debra and Lundy are shot by someone.

4 “Lost Boys” (9.2)

In the tenth episode of season 4, there is a lot going on at a frantic pace. Firstly, Arthur is about to kill again and he is stalking a little boy, with Dexter on his tail. He cannot let anyone else die because of Trinity.

Meanwhile, Debra is interrogating Christine and it is one of the tensest moments in the whole season. This episode also sheds a light on the similarities between Trinity and Dexter.

3 “Hungry Man” (9.4)

The ninth episode of season 4 takes it up a notch, as Dexter gets to know that Arthur isn’t a family man, at all. Instead, his family is absolutely terrified of him. Elsewhere, Debra is chasing Trinity and plans to work on the case for the whole weekend, which Dexter doesn’t like, obviously.

There’s something unusual about Christine, and Debra is pretty much sure of that. Her doubts are proved to be true when the episode ends in an incredible twist.

2 “Hello, Dexter Morgan” (9.5)

The penultimate episode of season 4 sees Dexter feeling intimidated for the first time in the entire series. Arthur finally gets to know the real identity of Kyle Butler, which means Dexter’s family is in danger.

Back at the station, LaGuerta and Angel are in a spot of bother as Matthews now has the evidence to implicate both of them. Also, Christine takes an extreme step to save her father.

1 “The Getaway” (9.8)

The season 4 finale is arguably the best episode of the series and one of the best finales in television showbiz history. Arthur knows about Dexter, which means his family is in harm’s way and he cannot let anything happen to them.

But Trinity isn’t going away that easily, especially after what Dexter did to him. It’s a fight between two monsters and only one will come out on top.
