A new image from Dexter season 9 gives the first look at Jennifer Carpenter’s return as Debra Morgan. Deb played an integral part of Dexter’s story from the very first episode, being Dexter’s adoptive sister and nearly a victim of the Ice Truck Killer. The last few seasons saw her relationship with Dexter strained as she struggled with romantic feelings for him, her dislike for Hannah McKay, and the revelation that her brother is a serial killer. Deb’s story came to an end in season 8 after Dexter, as an act of mercy, shut off her life support and dropped her body in the middle of the ocean.

Fan and critics have criticized season 8’s finale since 2013, which is why many felt relieved when Showtime announced Dexter was returning for season 9. The limited series, sub-titled New Blood, focuses on Dexter hiding out in a small town in upstate New York as Jim Lindsay. Initially, Michael C. Hall was the only original actor returning, with Clancy Brown (Kurt Caldwell), Julia Jones (Angela Bishop), and Jamie Chung (Molly) joining him. Showtime has since provided more exciting casting announcements in the past few months, with John Lithgow returning as the Trinity Killer and Carpenter returning as Deb.

Now, Showtime has provided the first official look of Dexter and Deb’s reunion in Dexter: New Blood. It was announced at Showtime’s TCA presentation that Carpenter would portray Dexter’s Dark Passenger, a role his adoptive father (Harry Morgan) played in the original series. The two other images show Dexter with a sheet of plastic, possibly prepping a kill room, and Jack Alcott, who is supposedly playing the older version of Harrison Morgan. Dexter: New Blood‘s first full trailer did a great job of giving viewers an idea of what season 9 will look like without giving away too much about the story. The teasers made it clear that Dexter is back to killing in the limited series, but his reasoning isn’t clear just yet. Harrison is one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the series after season 8 ended with him going to Argentina with Hannah McKay. Showtime hasn’t officially confirmed that Alcott is playing Harrison, but one of their recent tweets hinted that was indeed the case. As for Debra, this image makes it very clear the role she will play in season 9.

While Showtime seems to be trying to fix Dexter‘s hated finale, they have made it clear that they will not undo anything that happened in past seasons. For a while, it seemed like Carpenter wouldn’t return for the series since there isn’t a logical way to resurrect her, but bringing her back as Dexter’s new Dark Passenger makes sense. Dexter evolved quite a bit in the show’s last few seasons, being more open to his feelings and even briefly giving up killing altogether. Because of this, it wouldn’t quite make sense to bring back Harry Morgan as Dexter’s Dark Passenger; however, it could be the perfect way to bring back Deb, who has always played a crucial role in Dexter’s life.
