Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Legends of Tomorrow season 7, episode 12, “Too Legit To Quit.”

The lead-in to the finale of Legends of Tomorrow season 7 killed off Gary Green, though this seems likely to be a writer’s trick that will be quickly reversed. The events of Legends of Tomorrow season 7 developed the comic relief character into the spiritual heart of the Legends. As such, it would be a mistake to kill Gary off, particularly after he seemed close to securing a well-deserved happy ending.

The action of Legends of Tomorrow season 7, episode 12, “Too Legit To Quit,” found the time-traveling heroes locked in a stalemate with the Evil Gideon AI who was determined to destroy them. Eventually, a compromise was negotiated by the human Gideon, who had been created earlier in the season after sorceress and ex-demon Astra Logue tried to work a resurrection spell on the wreckage of the Waverider. The human Gideon agreed to take on the Time Master role that the Evil Gideon’s programming required and the Evil Gideon, in turn, agreed to leave the Legends in peace after returning them all to their proper places in the timeline.

The only alteration to Evil Gideon’s plan which the human Gideon made was that she asked Gary Green, with whom she had started a romantic relationship, to stay with her and help her police the timeline. Since Gary was an alien pretending to be human with no life outside of his life as a superhero, human Gideon presumed that her AI counterpart would have no issue with Gary staying with her. Unfortunately, Evil Gideon had no intention of honoring her bargain to spare the Legends or bending upon the point that every timeship must have only one AI and one Time Master.  The Evil Gideon flushed Gary into the Temporal Zone, telling the human Gideon only that Gary had “left the ship,” leading her to think Gary had abandoned her after she confessed to lying to him and the other Legends earlier in order to save their lives.

While the cliffhanger leading into Legends of Tomorrow‘s season 7 finale suggests that Gary Green is dead, it’s hard to believe that the series would kill him now after all the character has been through. Originally introduced to the series as a bumbling agent of the Time Bureau in the same vein as Inspector Clouseau or Maxwell Smart, Gary Green became the Legends’ biggest fanboy and an apprentice warlock under the tutelage of John Constantine. He was later revealed to be an alien who had fallen in love with Earth culture and taken to pretending he was human in Legends of Tomorrow season 6.

While he was often goofy and rarely competent, Gary Green was repeatedly shown to have a hero’s courage, despite his missteps, and his compassion and ironic insight into human nature made him a surprisingly valuable member of the Legends of Tomorrow. Gary further developed into the heart of the Legends of Tomorrow cast in Season 7, being the first to notice when his teammates were suffering in silence and the first to offer a shoulder to cry on or a helping hand. It would go against the grain of the series, which has always been one of the more hopeful and light-hearted shows in the Arrowverse, to kill Gary without there being some kind of noble sacrifice to make his death worth it.

With one episode of Legends of Tomorrow season 7 remaining, there is ample time for the team to discover Gary’s death and work to avert it. Gary has been briefly erased from time and died before, so there is no reason to expect that his teammates would not act now to save him again. Additionally, the limits of Gary’s endurance as an alien are not clearly defined, so it’s possible he could survive in the Temporal Zone until the team located him later.

The Legends of Tomorrow season 7 finale airs on Wednesday, March 2 on The CW.
