In the season 2 finale of Netflix’s animated sitcom Disenchantment, viewers were left wondering what the new “Trøg” creatures were and whether they had a connection to the other elves on the show. The series, created by Matt Groening (who also created The Simpsons and Futurama), wrapped up season 2 with a finale that was fraught with action and new questions. Bean (voiced by Abbi Jacobson) becomes the scapegoat for her dad’s (King Zøg) plotted assassination and accidental bullet wound, and Elfo inadvertently convinces everyone attending the subsequent trial that, in addition to being guilty, she’s also a witch.

After escaping from prison, Bean, Elfo, and Luci are nearly burned at the stake for their “witchcraft.” But before they meet their demise, the trio plummets through the ground—ending up in a catacomb surrounded by Queen Dagmar (Bean’s mom, voiced by Shannon Horgan) and a densely-packed colony of pale, elf-like creatures with foreboding eyes. Netflix’s closed captioning identified these expressionless creatures as Trøgs. And besides being stealthily hidden within a few instances from previous episodes, this is fans’ first introduction to Dagmar’s runtish minions. Both this unforeseen finale twist, as well as the Trøg presence that carries over into season 3, left viewers wondering about the nature and backstory of these catacomb-dwelling Subterraneans.

Though Trøgs and their history remain largely enigmatic, besides their seeming allegiance to Dagmar, fans have posited different theories about who they are. Some fans believe that Trøgs are half-human and half-elf, forced to dwell in darkness because this social taboo would make them pariahs above ground. After all, their size and facial features strongly resemble the elven race. In addition, at the beginning of season 3, episode 1, one of the Trøgs makes a point to specify that there’s a dash through the “o” in their name. This distinction must serve some sort of purpose; possibly conveying that these creatures are akin to royalty, such as King Zøg, due to the similarity in their names.

There are also theories that hypothesize that Elfo is part Trøg himself, as details about his mother are still relatively unknown. If the supposition about Trøg royalty is accurate, this would mean that Elfo also has royal blood. Regardless, he does have obvious elf-like physical similarities with these creatures, especially the distinct kind of nose they share. Some fans have also pointed out that a purposely straightforward name like Elfo is suspicious within itself, as if it’s trying to camouflage deeper aspects of his identity. There’s an array of avenues that could be taken with the Trøgs, as magical creatures (i.e. elves, mermaids, ogres, fairies, and more) are staples of the sitcom’s medieval fantasy nature.

Even with the recent premiere of season 3, there’s still a great deal that’s unknown about them and what led to their isolation and becoming henchman for Dagmar. Since these creatures are so new to the series, there’s still a great deal about them and how they fit into (or more aptly, below), Dreamland. Whether they’re cursed elves or Elfo is one of them, what’s known for sure is that Disenchantment fans are buzzing with interest and questions regarding these pint-sized creatures and can’t wait to put more pieces of the puzzle together.
