Disney decided to take on the inner workings of an arcade in Wreck-It Ralph. This 2012 computer-animated comedy received fresh reviews for its clever story and colorful world. However, not every detail of the film makes sense, even with the release of its sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet. We’re here to look closer at the questions we still have about this animation.

Warning: We’re going to get super picky. Also, we won’t be considering anything that happens in the film’s aforementioned follow-up feature. Get ready to enter the games. Here are 10 things that don’t make sense about Wreck-It Ralph.

10 Why Did Sergeant Calhoun’s Fiancé Not Regenerate?

Calhoun has a tough personality because she was programmed with a tragic backstory. On her wedding day, a nasty Cy-Bug crashed through the windows behind the altar and ate up her husband-to-be. The problem with this? When a character dies in their own game, they are supposed to regenerate. Why then did Calhoun’s former love not come back to life?

While you could say that because he was part of Calhoun’s backstory, he didn’t have the same rules as regular, playable characters, this idea was never touched on.

9 Why Did Racers Need Gold Coins To Enter Sugar Rush?

At the end of every day in the arcade, the racers of Sugar Rush compete to see who ends up on the racing roster the next morning. In order to participate in this race, characters had to throw in a golden coin from their previous winnings.

While this could have just been a scheme that King Candy invented to keep Vanellope out of the game, it seems like it could create a circular problem. If a certain character continually lost races, wouldn’t that mean that character wouldn’t have gold coins? The only way to get a gold coin is to race, but the only way to qualify for a race is to have a gold coin. Wouldn’t that cause avatars to disappear from the roster over time?

8 Where Did Vanellope Get Her Original Kart From?

Vanellope tries to compete in a Sugar Rush race by offering up Ralph’s gold medal from Hero’s Duty as an entry coin. Though she qualifies for the competition because she has this item, her dreams of racing get destroyed after Taffyta and the other racers trash her kart. Therefore, Vanellope makes a deal with Ralph; She’ll return his medal after winning the race if he gets her something new to drive.

The two then enter a mini-game that lets them design a new kart. They’re only able to do this after Ralph breaks in the door. So if Vanellope needed Ralph in order to get a new kart, how did she get her kart the first time? Where else could it have come from?

7 Why Didn’t Calhoun Know About Turbo?

King Candy, who used to be known as Turbo, was the main character of an 8-bit racing game titled Turbo Time. After a new racing game was brought to the arcade, however, his title lost popularity. He invaded the new one, and as a result, they both got unplugged.

This tale is popular among the characters in the arcade, and everyone seems to recognize the phrase “going Turbo,” which was coined as a result of King Candy’s story. However, Calhoun doesn’t know this tale, and Fix-It Felix Jr. must explain it to her. Unless Calhoun’s game is super new, it’s surprising that she’s not aware of Turbo’s origins. She has the freedom to leave her game when she wants, and this tale is one of the arcade’s most popular.

6 Why Doesn’t Vanellope Know How To Drive?

Right after Ralph and Vanellope build a new car, they’re confronted by King Candy’s crew and must rush away. Vanellope reveals that she doesn’t know how to drive, which means Ralph has to assist with the getaway. We later see Vanellope practicing her skills in a secret location, and eventually becoming a good driver.

King Candy didn’t take away Vanellope’s driving skills, so why does it take her so long to regain them at first? It’s not like she’s never raced before.

5 How Did King Candy Mess With The Code?

Perhaps coding is a skill the arcade game characters naturally have, but Wreck-It-Ralph never clearly explains how King Candy figured out how to change Sugar Rush’s code to enter himself into the game.

He’s not from Sugar Rush, so how would he know what to do? Were there no guards protecting the code? Was it that easy to find the info and rearrange it?

4 When Did Vanellope Get Imprisoned?

King Candy tells Ralph that Vanellope shouldn’t compete in the race for her own good. If she does, she will be wiped from Sugar Rush. To keep her from competing, Ralph decides to destroy the car they build together. Angry and upset, she runs away.

The next time we see Vanellope, she is in a prison. However, the film doesn’t explain how she gets here. Additionally, it fails to recount how Ralph knew she was here because the next time we see her is when he’s coming to break her out. These plot points were big ones to skip over.

3 How Did All The Other Games Forget Vanellope Was A Princess?

During the conclusion of Wreck-It-Ralph, Vanellope crosses the finish line and regains her rule as Princess. During this sequence, the game’s code restores the memories of all the citizens and the racers, who had forgotten that Vanellope was their rightful ruler.

While this explains why the characters of Sugar Rush treated Vanellope poorly, it doesn’t explain how the characters in the other games forgot who she was. We see the characters traveling between different games, so how did they not realize something was up after King Candy took control of Sugar Rush instead of Vanellope? Shouldn’t they have remembered her reign?

2 Is Sugar Rush Fully Fixed?

Though Vanellope and Ralph manage to restore Sugar Rush‘s original code and defeat King Candy, the game is not perfect.

For one thing, a structure topped with a “KC” emblem and a crown (representing King Candy) can be spied along the racetrack. Since he was never originally a part of the game, shouldn’t these go away? Additionally, Vanellope continues to glitch. Though some have suggested that this is because it’s her racing power-up in the game, this is never fully explained.

1 Why Were Characters From Other Games Allowed To Live In New Games?

Ralph decides to help out the characters who have had their games unplugged at the end of the film. For example, Q*bert and his friends are welcomed into Fix-It Felix, Jr. as new characters, making the game better than ever.

While Ralph’s wish to give everyone a home was noble, this idea has the potential to backfire. After all, when Turbo invaded the racing game that grew to be more popular than his own, it was unplugged by the arcade owner. Adding new characters to other games could have the same consequences.
