Disney+’s newest changes solve a big Deadpool 3 problem for Marvel Studios regarding its streaming home. Ryan Reynolds’ X-Men franchise is currently set to be the lone survivor of Fox’s universe after Disney acquired the studio in 2019. The R-rated superhero action/comedy series has been a huge hit through its first two installments. Although Disney and Marvel aren’t usually part of the R-rated entertainment business, that will change with Deadpool 3, which has raised a number of questions about the future.

Deadpool 3 is still in the early stages of development, as the sequel doesn’t have a director or release date. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed Deadpool 3 will be R-rated and set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity. While fans have wondered how Wade Wilson will join the MCU after playfully interacting with Fox’s confusing X-Men canon, the Merc with a Mouth’s future is undoubtedly promising. However, integrating R-rated content into the MCU is not an easy task for a variety of reasons. One of the many problems Deadpool 3 has been facing is the likelihood that it wouldn’t eventually stream on Disney+ alongside the rest of Marvel Studios’ movies and shows.

It is no secret that Disney+ has been a family-friendly streaming service since it launched in 2019. The Mouse House has gone to great lengths in some cases to maintain this image. All R-rated and TV-MA programming Disney controlled went to Hulu instead of Disney+ as a result, but that has now changed. Netflix’s former Marvel shows are coming to Disney+ in March 2022 along with revamped parental controls. Both of these announcements are just the beginning of Disney+ becoming a home for more mature content and expanding the types of shows and movies subscribers will find on it. This is great news for Deadpool 3, as it should now have no problem joining the other MCU movies and shows on Disney+ instead of being potentially alienated to Hulu.

Part of the announcement of Netflix’s Marvel shows moving to Disney+ focused on the streaming service becoming a hub for all Marvel content. These content and setting changes allow Deadpool 3 to remain with the bulk of Marvel Studios’ programming. Disney+ currently is the exclusive streaming home for almost every MCU movie. The Incredible Hulk is missing as a result of Universal owning the rights to the movie. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy is similarly absent from Disney+ thanks to Sony’s control of their streaming rights. However, those movies are expected to be available on Disney+ in the near future as part of Sony and Disney’s recent deal for Spider-Man content.

Now that there is a path to Deadpool 3 streaming on Disney+, the movie can truly serve as a bridge between the MCU and Fox’s X-Men franchise. The main X-Men movies are already on Disney+ and it won’t be surprising to see Deadpool and Deadpool 2 join the service before too long thanks to these changes. Assuming Deadpool 3 finds a clever way to transition Ryan Reynolds’ superhero to the MCU by leaving Fox’s X-Men continuity, the movie could play a role in marking the end of that franchise while setting up Wade Wilson’s MCU future.
