The animated feature Ron’s Gone Wrong has quietly climbed to the #1 slot on Disney+ since its debut on the streaming service. Ron’s Gone Wrong was produced by 20th Century Animation, which is now owned by Disney. The film follows the invention of a Baymax-type robot called B-Bot designed to help make friends. When young loner Barney gets a defective B-Bot, it wreaks havoc in his life, but they may just become unlikely friends after all. The film’s voice cast includes Jack Dylan Grazer, Ed Helms, Olivia Colman, Rob Delaney, Justice Smith, Liam Payne, Ruby Wax, Flula Borg, and Zach Galifianakis as Ron.

Although Ron’s Gone Wrong was well-received by critics and audiences, who gave it 80% and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively, it hardly made a splash in the box office. The film opened on October 22, 2021, a weekend that was topped by the sci-fi epic Dune, which remained at #1 the following week as well. Ron’s Gone Wrong premiered at #5 domestically and stayed around there until it fell out of the top 10 on Thanksgiving weekend. It ended up scraping together a decent $60 million worldwide, but it’s almost certain that it didn’t make its budget back, given how reluctant the studio has been to share that information.

Per the streaming tracking service FlixPatrol, the top 10 chart for Disney+ movies in the U.S. is currently topped by Ron’s Gone Wrong, which dropped on the service on December 15. It claimed the top slot in just two days, and is currently riding high above even the 2021 box office giant Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and holiday classics like Home Alone 1 and 2 and The Santa ClauseRon’s Gone Wrong is also #3 worldwide, even though it is not streaming in all international markets.

These numbers are also shocking because Ron’s Gone Wrong‘s streaming availability is diluted. Because of 20th Century’s deal with HBO Max at the beginning of the year, the film is streaming on both HBO Max and Disney+ in the United States. Ron’s Gone Wrong is also doing rather well on that service, hitting #9 below projects like the first two Matrix films (for those catching up before Matrix Resurrections comes out next week), holiday movies like 8-Bit Christmas, and the Will Smith Oscar bid biopic King Richard.

Ron’s Gone Wrong‘s ascendancy isn’t entirely unsurprising. One of the biggest problems with Disney+ has been its consistent lack of new content. Although the service has premiered big-ticket series like WandaVision and The Mandalorian, there are substantial lulls in between their big releases that have them struggling to keep up with the output of streaming giants like Netflix. Anything new on the service is sure to be gobbled up by families waiting for something fresh, especially something that seems to be as pleasing to audiences as this particular project.
