Disney and Pixar’s Scottish princess, Merida, is a character known for her lush curly red hair, fiery personality, and willingness to do anything to change her fate. Unlike other Disney princesses, this Scottish lass does everything in her power to avoid ending up with a prince.

Since she beats to the ballad of her own drum, many cosplayers are inspired by her and have worked to craft astounding costumes that would make even Queen Elinor approve. Here is a look at the top 10 Merida cosplays that really channel the Scottish princess’s fiery spirit – we still can’t believe how much they all remind us of her!

10 “Some say our destiny is tied to the land, as much a part of us as we are of it.”

Cosplayer, “Great Queen Lina” does a remarkable job of recreating the Disney/Pixar princess. Not only does she wear the iconic costume and don a think, red, curly wig, she also poses with a horse that is of the same breed that inspired Angus, a Shire.

The silly pose with the horse also hearkens to Merida’s free spirit. She’s definitely not a character to take things seriously, and this cosplay channels her true nature.

9 “I am Merida, firstborn descendant of Clan DunBroch, and I’ll be shooting for my own hand.”

Thousand Faces Cosplay produces a very motivational portrayal of Merida as the esteemed archer she is. This cosplay shows the dedication Merida has to her craft, alongside the common usage of the red, curly wig, and green costuming.

The colored carvings on the bow are nicely added details because it customizes the bow to replicate the carvings Merida worked into her bow in the film.

This cosplayer uses the bow prop to show Merida’s strength. Known for her eagle-eyed aim, Merida confidently tests fate, and this cosplayer hearkens to such free-spirited energy.

The untamable curls, the seemingly Scottish Highland setting, and welcoming gesture work to this cosplayer’s favor. It is as if the cosplayer is saying, “Take my hand, let’s go on a Highland adventure!”

“There are those who say fate is something beyond our command. That destiny is not our own, but I know better. Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it.” 🏹❤️ . . Ok I know Merida’s horse Angus is black but there were no black horses available SOO meet Otima!! She’s the sweetest girl and we have a lot of pretty photos together so I’ll try not to spam you TOO much BUT I can’t promise anything 😤 Also I had never ridden a horse in my life please appreciate my efforts 😬

This cosplayer does a wondrous job of incorporating a horse that is reminiscent of Merida’s beloved steed, Angus. She looks poised and in control of not only her steed but also her fate, just as Merida is in the film.

Angus would definitely approve of his equine doppelganger.

These cosplayers show the loving dynamic between Merida and her mother Queen Elinor, while this was not always the case between the two characters in the film. The costumes are incredible and created with great attention to detail.

The long hair of Queen Elinor and her matching crown was a great touch to compliment the outrageously large red wig for the Merida cosplay. Overall, a very well done cosplay pairing of characters.

This modern iteration of Merida is rather refreshing. There are aspects of this cosplay that are reminiscent of Disney’s modernized Merida in Ralph Breaks the Internet, such as the flannel and shorts.

However, this cosplayer adds bear tights, simple jewelry, including an arrow necklace, and a hat to go atop her wig.

This cosplayer uses both costuming, light, and props to show Merida’s curious nature. The costume choices are nice attention to detail, because there is added lace and layers than in other cosplay costumes, while the large, curly red wig distinguishes the character from other Disney princesses. By placing a blue light in the lantern, the image gives off the magical allure of Scottish wisps.

2 “You’re a witch! That’s why the wisps led me here!”

This is another cosplay of Merida from the cosplay above. A remarkable distinction from the cosplay above, this Merida is more grounded in the medieval setting, than the character’s magical experiences.

A fantastic adaption of the typical Merida costuming, this cosplayer uses Norse-like costuming to bring forth a more enriching Celtic aesthetic compared to the typical tunic.

This, paired with poses, and a deeply forested setting, creates a uniquely vivid and artistic representation of the Scottish princess.
