Today Disney fans were treated to a first look at a new racing game known as Disney Speedstorm. The game was announced during February’s Nintendo Direct, which showcased several new titles that will be releasing soon for the Nintendo Switch.

Racing games have become a staple for the various gaming platforms, but the most iconic Nintendo racing game is Mario Kart, which was also featured in the Direct due to the announcement that 48 courses are coming to Mario Kart 8 in the form of DLC. Disney is no stranger to video games either. The most notable appearance of Disney characters in video games is Kingdom Hearts, which mashes the world of Disney with Final Fantasy. Throughout the game, players meet up with different Disney characters, including King MIckey. There have also been many Disney films adapted to video games over the years, each one with its own style.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Disney Speedstorm was showcased during today’s Nintendo Direct and fans were given a first look at what to expect from the game. Disney Speedstorm looks similar to Mario Kart, largely due to its status as an arcade-style kart racer, as opposed to a more realistic racing simulator like Forza. During the showcase, tracks based on franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean and Monsters Inc. were displayed. Each character is going to have special moves and power-ups which will allow them to get ahead of the rest. While there was no mention of how these power-ups are received, in the preview it looked like there might be icons that players drive through in order to collect them. Fans could see Mickey Mouse conducting a symphony, Sulley using his scare tactics, and Mulan throwing explosives.

There were other characters shown throughout the video, like Captain Jack Sparrow, Donald Duck, and the Beast, and it was also mentioned that more characters will be added to the roster. Like FortniteDisney Speedstorm will have seasons and with each season new tracks and new characters will be added. The game is free-to-play and at the moment there is no mention of any paid upgrades, though microtransactions are anticipated. Additionally, Disney Speedstorm will have a cross-platform mode that will allow players to play with friends across all consoles. There will also be a split-screen mode which allows players to play on one Switch simultaneously.

For Disney fans, the game appears to be an enjoyable way to play as their favorite characters and race through scenes they know and love from the movies. The free to play nature of the title will help fans get into the game, though it remains to be seen what sort of microtransactions might be anticipated. While there is no official release date, Disney Speedstorm is available to pre-register to play and will be coming soon.
