Billy Magnussen confirms Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake spin-off movie is coming as it continues development at the studio. The 2019 film marked the House of Mouse’s second adaptation of the tale from One Thousand and One Nights centered on the titular street thief who falls in love with his kingdom’s princess, Jasmine, and comes across a magic lamp home to the wish-granting Genie. While trying to impress Jasmine with the powers of the Genie, Aladdin learns of the nefarious plans from the power-hungry sorcerer Jafar and must find a way to save her and their land from Jafar before it’s too late.

Mena Massoud led the cast of Aladdin in the titular role alongside Will Smith as the Genie, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Magnussen and Numan Acar. Helmed by Guy Ritchie on a script he co-wrote with John August, the film received largely mixed reviews from critics, who directed praise towards the cast, production design and music but criticized Ritchie’s direction and the CGI. Regardless of the mixed reception, Aladdin became a box office smash upon release, grossing over $1 billion against its $183 million budget, leading to Disney working on multiple follow-ups.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for the home media release of No Time to Die, Billy Magnussen opened up about his live-action Aladdin remake spin-off. The star confirmed that the project is still in development, though kept his lips sealed on what’s to come from the film. See what Magnussen said below:

“[Dramatic Laugh] Oh! That’s what I got for you. It’s coming.”

The announcement of the Aladdin remake spin-off centered on Magnussen’s Prince Anders has drawn some controversy amongst audiences. Some found the character to be largely forgettable in the live-action remake whilst others found Disney’s decision to make a film based on the sole white character to work against the diverse nature of the first film. The latter concern from audiences was a bit minimized when the House of Mouse finally greenlit development on Aladdin 2, though both have largely gone quiet over the past year.

With the ongoing pandemic still affecting blockbuster productions, it’s understandable Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake spin-off centered on Prince Anders is still taking some time to get off the ground two years after it was first announced to be in the works. However, for those who did fall in love with Magnussen’s supporting character, the star’s confirmation that development is still underway on the project and that it is coming should be exciting to hear. In the meantime, audiences can catch up with Magnussen’s turn in the James Bond franchise with No Time to Die now available on 4K Ultra-HD, Blu-ray and DVD.
