Warning! Spoilers ahead for Alpha Flight (2004) #9!

Canada’s superhero team Alpha Flight has fought numerous foes over the years, and even once went up against Japan’s super team, Big Hero 6. But the version of Big Hero 6 they fought in this Marvel Comics story may not fully be one that Disney fans recognize.

The film Big Hero 6 was released in 2014 by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It focused on Hiro Hamada and the healthcare companion robot that his brother built. Together, they formed the basis of Big Hero 6, a team ready to fight crime and bring a suspected murderer to justice. The team in the film was made up of Hiro, Baymax, Go-Go Tamago, Honey Lemon, Wasabi No-Ginger, and Fred Frederickson. Up to now, between the film and the animated series, the team has only been known to fight villains. This wasn’t always the case in the comics.

After the completion of the 1998 run of Sunfire and Big Hero 6, the team made an appearance in Alpha Flight #9 (2005). This issue, written by Scott Lobdell with art by Clayton Henry, starts off immediately with a fight between Alpha Flight and Big Hero 6. This iteration of Japan’s super team is very similar to the first version of the team. The members include Hiro, Baymax, Go Go Tamayo, Honey Lemon, Sunpyre, and Ebon Samurai. The original team involved Sunfire over Sunpyre and Silver Samurai over Ebon Samurai. These heroes fight against Sasquatch, Yukon Jack, Centennial, Nemesis, Puck, and Major Mapleleaf. Within just a few pages, it is clear that Big Hero 6 is holding their own very well.

Baymax—originally a bodyguard synthform built by boy genius Hiro—is in his dragon mode and pins down Sasquatch. Honey Lemon is able to mangle Major Mapleleaf’s uniform with some furry assistance. Hiro, despite not having any super powers, can still stand his ground against Yukon Jack, electrifying him. While Big Hero 6 was not a team that was used very often in Marvel Comics, they are shown to be a strong and very capable one. Partway through the fight, Sasquatch bests Baymax and discovers what appears to be a chip. This chip reveals a tiny clue about why this fight even began.

The chip, which Sasquatch shows to Hiro, is said to have been used to control Big Hero 6. The team has been set up to attack Alpha Flight, but the full reasoning for why is never revealed. Hiro takes the chip and says that he will analyze it when Big Hero 6 returns to Japan. Despite saying this, that never appears to actually happen and a culprit for it is never found. After the fight is done, Alpha Flight move on to other matters involving Flashback, and Big Hero 6 is never seen again in the rest of the series. Ultimately, Big Hero 6 would completely disappear until 2008, when Chris Claremont and David Nakayama penned a five-issue mini-series focused solely on Japan’s super team. While Big Hero 6 are solely crime fighters in their Disney film and television series, the team has done a few surprising things—like taking on Canada’s team of superheroes within the pages of Marvel Comics.
