The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer has been released in glorious IMAX 4K quality, providing a better look at the movie’s multiversal variants. Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come a long way since kicking off with Black Widow in 2021, and this year is about to get a lot more out of hand thanks to the introduction of Marvel’s multiverse. On the heels of Loki season 1 and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will now be tasked with his own multiversal storyline.

In keeping with Marvel’s tradition of intense secrecy, many details about the sequel are still under wraps, though there have been a plethora of rumors regarding what variants might pop up in Doctor Strange 2. After the trailer revealed a mystery voice, Patrick Stewart all but confirmed he will reprise his X-Men role as Charles Xavier a.k.a Professor X, in the movie. It’s also clear Cumberbatch will be playing an evil variant of Doctor Strange, most likely Strange Supreme from What If…?, though the exact identity of some of the film’s variants still elude fans.

Because their identity is unclear, the glowing human figure that Wanda battles with has been a focal point in the trailer. Initial speculation pointed to it being the Fantastic Four’s Human Torch, while some fan theories went as far as to claim that it is an Iron Man variant played by Tom Cruise, who has been rumored to join the MCU. The growing consensus now seems to be that it is Monica Rambeau as a Captain Marvel variant. Judging by the improved picture quality provided by this trailer, this appears to be the likeliest possibility.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be available on IMAX screens when it arrives later this year on May 6. In fact, Marvel Studios and IMAX have enjoyed a long creative partnership both during the production process and theatrical rollout. Last year, Marvel even brought IMAX Enhanced to Disney+, allowing users to stream several MCU movies in an expanded aspect ratio from the comfort of their own homes. For now, fans can enjoy mining this new 4k trailer for clues regarding Doctor Strange 2‘s multiverse variants.
