New Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness merch arrives showing a realistic-looking Gargantos, the film’s Lovecraftian villain. The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel continues the stories of its titular sorcerer and Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff following the events of WandaVision and Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which the duo learned of the realities of the multiverse. The duo will have to work to work together with Sorcerer Supreme Wong in an effort to save the fabric of space and time when Strange’s spell gone awry opens the doors to the multiverse and reveals multiple threats, including an alternate version of himself.

Benedict Cumberbatch returns to lead the cast of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness alongside fellow MCU vets Olsen, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo. The sequel will also mark the MCU debut of Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, who in the comics would go on to don the moniker of Miss America and join the Young Avengers. Following a rocky road of development between original Doctor Strange co-writer/director Scott Derrickson’s departure and multiple COVID-related delays, the Sam Raimi-helmed follow-up is currently gearing up to hit theaters this May.

As anticipation builds for the film, new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness merch has arrived from Walmart. The poster, designed by Trends International, shows a realistic looking Gargantos, the Lovecraftian sea-monster villain set to appear in the upcoming MCU sequel. Check out the new poster below:

With just over four months remaining until the film’s release, many details surrounding Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ plot continue to be a mystery, namely who the central villain is of the story. The first trailer for the film showed Cumberbatch would be portraying the evil Strange Supreme variant seen in Marvel’s What If…?, though no confirmation has been given whether it’s the same version seen in the animated series or a new incarnation of the character. The trailer, attached to the post-credits of Spider-Man: No Way Home, also offered a brief glimpse of Gargantos in the film as he attacks Strange and America Chavez by throwing a bus at the duo in the middle of an unknown city.

Gargantos’ inclusion in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has proven to be something of a curiosity for those familiar with the Marvel comics, given its use as an antagonist to Namor in the past. Recent rumors have suggested that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will introduce Namor and the kingdom of Atlantis to set up a spin-off film, though the hero’s MCU introduction has been a complicated mess of rights issues for nearly a decade due to Universal Pictures still holding the rights to the character. Only time will tell how Gargantos factors into the sequel’s story when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6.
