A new rumor suggests that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will introduce Wolverine to the MCU, but it won’t be Hugh Jackman. The sequel, directed by Sam Raimi, will see Doctor Strange open the door to the multiverse after casting a forbidden spell. As seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the multiverse opens the MCU up to every past cinematic variation of their characters, allowing Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire to return as Spider-Man. The Doctor Strange sequel has already set the rumor mill ablaze with lists of possible characters that may appear in the film, which has only been furthered by the recent release of a Multiverse of Madness Super Bowl trailer.

Doctor Strange 2 brings back Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, along with fellow MCU alumni Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, Benedict Wong as Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, and Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Porter. The film is also set to introduce America Chavez as played by Xochitl Gomez, who has already been featured in the trailers. Patrick Stewart also looks to be reprising his role from Fox’s X-Men films as Professor X/Charles Xavier, which already opens the movie up to a world of heroes beyond the MCU. Along with an ever-growing list of other possible characters, a new rumor posits that the Doctor Strange sequel will also feature Wolverine. However, the rumored version of Wolverine in the movie is not Hugh Jackman.

In a Tweet from Joseph Deckelmeier of The Illuminerdi and Screen Rant, he states that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will feature Wolverine before adding that “it definitely won’t be Hugh Jackman.” Given that the multiverse easily allows any character to appear, Wolverine could pop up in the film. Audiences have come to love Jackman in the role, though he previously stated that 2017’s Logan was his final performance as the character. Stewart also said the same for his portrayal of Charles Xavier, but it now looks like that is no longer true. If Jackman honestly isn’t returning to the role, the doors are wide open as to who may embody the new Wolverine. Check out Deckelmeier’s Tweet below:

With Stewart back as Professor X, it would seem like a natural fit for Jackman to be Wolverine. However, as seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock recognized that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was not the same one he had come to know, which could be the case for Stewart’s Xavier and the new Wolverine. As to who will play Wolverine in the potential appearance, that remains to be seen, though rumors have pointed to Daniel Radcliffe possibly being the character.

The list of other characters possibly showing up in Doctor Strange 2 is vast, though many are pure speculation. Tom Cruise is said to be a variant of Tony Stark/Iron Man, with a version of the Fantastic 4’s Mr. Fantastic also rumored. Captain Carter, as seen in Marvel’s What If…, has also been hinted at, and even Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool could appear, though he has recently denied the rumor. With Raimi in the director’s chair, it’s also said that Tobey Maguire may return yet again as Spider-Man. However, with Spider-Man: No Way Home holding many of its prominent character reveals tightly under wraps, the Doctor Strange sequel is likely to do the same, giving audiences similar moments of shock and awe. Audiences will finally know what secrets Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has to share when it hits theaters in May.
