Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ official runtime has been revealed and it is shorter than what many may have expected. Benedict Cumberbatch returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after his supporting role as the sorcerer in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Strange accidentally opened a rift in the multiverse during an attempt to help Peter Parker (Tom Holland) regain control of his life. The Evil Dead‘s Sam Raimi will direct Multiverse of Madness, returning to Marvel for the first time since Spider-Man 3 (2007).

The horror-themed Doctor Strange sequel will follow the titular character as he deals with the consequences of his actions in No Way Home. Strange joins forces with Sorcerer Supreme Wong (Benedict Wong), Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and MCU newcomer America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) to set the universe straight and face off against a new mysterious foe, as well as with other variants of themselves. Chiwetel Ejiofor is set to return as Mordo and Patrick Stewart will make the jump to the MCU, seemingly as Professor X, a role he played in Fox’s X-Men series.

With tickets for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness going on sale on April 6, listings on Fandango have revealed the upcoming film’s runtime. According to a now-debunked ticket listing, the sequel was originally reported to have a runtime of nearly two and a half hours, which would have made it one of the longest films in the entirety of the MCU. But now it seems this won’t be the case. Multiverse of Madness has an official runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes.

The length of the film may come as a surprise to some as the previous two MCU movies had fairly long runtimes. The Eternals clocked in at two hours and thirty-six minutes. Spider-Man: No Way Home came in at two hours and twenty-eight minutes. Although long, the falsely reported two-and-a-half-hour runtime seemed appropriate due to the nature of Multiverse of Madness‘ story. The film will cover a broad and complex range of multiple realities and deal with different versions of various places and people. A variety of cameos and guest appearances have been hinted at, thus making a longer runtime for the film fairly believable.

With the overall complexity of the multiverse narrative the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel will cover, theories have spread across social media and fan sites. With Patrick Stewart returning as Professor X, many have wondered if mutants will now make an appearance in the MCU. Some have thought that his inclusion hinted at a multiversal Illuminati, a secret society in Marvel Comics that included the mutant leader along with Iron Man, Strange, and others. Speculation has run wild leading up to the film’s release. With the shorter runtime now confirmed, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is setting itself up to be packed to the brim.
