Doctor Strange’s Forgotten Daughter Returns in Marvel’s Future

WARNING: Spoilers for Wastelanders: Doom #1 ahead!

The long forgotten daughter of Clea and Doctor Strange has finally been reintroduced to the Marvel Comics Universe in the apocalyptic Old Man Logan spin off, Wastelanders: Doom #1. While little is known about Sofia Strange or how the character may be further incorporated into Marvel lore, the comic makes it very clear that Sofia is definitely the daughter of Doctor Strange, and is extremely powerful in her own right.

Sofia Strange was first introduced in 2004’s Epic Anthology as part of a planned relaunch of the “Epic Comics” lineup from Marvel, and was created by Jason Henderson and Greg Scott. She debuted as a young woman, and sorceress, living in New Orleans with her nanny, Aunt Vesper. Sofia’s story in Epic Anthology concerned her attempting to confront a ghost named The Whisperer while investigating the disappearance of a young girl. Sadly the entire “Epic Comics” lineup was cancelled, and Epic Anthology was released as a one-shot, so Sofia’s story “Strange Magic,” which was intended to be made into an entire series, was never created and Sofia has not been seen in Marvel Comics since.

In an interview with CBR Sofia’s co-creater Jason Henderson officially confirmed that she was intended to be the secret child of Stephen and Clea, and explained her history, saying,

“Sofia Strange (as she eventually came to be named) was the daughter of Doctor Strange and his other-dimensional wife Clea– and in fact, in an early script, the story begins not in New Orleans but in the Dark Dimension, where Queen Clea, Dormammu’s forces closing in, sends the young Sofia and her nanny Vesper to Earth. But Sofia must remain hidden, especially from Doctor Strange, who does not know she exists. For various reasons, Clea doesn’t want Stephen Strange roaring back to the Dark Dimension and making things worse.”

Well, finally, Marvel has made the decision to reintroduce the little-explored Sofia into the Multiverse, with her showing up as a servant of the powerful Baron Mordo in Wastelanders: Doom #1, written by Torunn Grønbekk with art by Julius Ohta. Wastelanders: Doom is a continuation of the popular Old Man Logan universe – officially delegated as Earth-21923 – and follows Doctor Doom as the tyrannical leader of the apocalyptic Wastelands following the power vacuum created by Wolverine slaughtering President Red Skull.

When Doom arrives in a desolate village, somehow kept alive by magic, he immediately makes his way to an abandoned-looking Sanctum Santorum where he is greeted by Sofia. Sofia is clearly being controlled by magic, but Doom goes along with her requests for a magical trial, and he is eventually able to get into the Santorum. While it seems like Doom thought he was about to meet Doctor Strange, it turns out that the town is actually being controlled by a Dark Dimension-powered Baron Mordo. After defeating Mordo, Doctor Doom asks Sofia why she went to the village to which she responds, “I came here in search of my father. He has not been seen in decades…” If the Sanctum Santorum isn’t enough to prove that Sofia is Strange’s daughter, Doom then explicitly calls her “Sofia Strange,” confirming her parentage.

There are so many potential theories as to how Sofia Strange ended up in Mordo’s town on Earth-21923, perhaps in this universe Sofia has always been around and a part of Doctor Strange’s life, but the real question is: Will Sofia ever be introduced in the main Earth-616 universe? Henderson has stated that, “I guess she’s still alive out there, probably practicing magic in the wake of Hurricane Katrina,” so there is a chance that Sofia is still in Louisiana, hiding from the Dread Dormammu. With her mother Clea recently ascending to the title of Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, the multiverse playing a huge role in Marvel’s latest era, and Stephen’s Strange Academy visiting different timelines, there are a myriad of ways that Marvel could reintroduce Sofia into mainstream comics continuity.
