The stoic sorcerer called Doctor Strange is typically adorned in magical artifacts and archaic tunics, but he’s gone full cosmic with a wonderful new costume in the pages of Marvel Comics. And most fans are sure to agree: Strange’s new comic duds would assuredly elevate Benedict Cumberbatch’s MCU costume on film, in the upcoming Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. “Hoary hosts of Hoggoth” willing, of course.

In keeping with common costume upgrades for new superhero movies and sequels, the traditions says it’s time for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange to get an upgrade. His film costume is a comic-book-accurate, mythical, eastern-inspired look connecting him to his origins. But after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, it’s only a matter of time until Strange sets his eyes upon the cosmic side of the MCU — as he has in his recent comics. If the Avengers got new suits to time travel in Endgame, and Strange will be traversing the multiverse in his new movie, then he will need a suit that can stand multi-dimensional wayfaring. So imagine those white Avengers ones, just… black.

The slick, black costume premiered in Issue #5 of artists Jesus Saiz, Cory Petit and writer Mark Waid’s current Doctor Strange run, finding Strange searching the cosmos to replenish his magics with the aid of alien Ancient One and arcanologist Kanna. The master of the mystic arts must forge and find new magical weapons and artifacts to save Kanna from the villainous Majesdane. And to do it, he gets the help of Nidavellirian dwarf, Eoffren. Aside from the exceedingly cool (and very Asgardian owl-helmet) attire he wore whilst creating his new duds, the black suit is a fitting leap into a stylized, 21st century iteration of the character. Take a look:

Black is quite a spectacular look for the Master of the Mystic Arts. It allows for Strange’s trusty Cloak of Levitation to drench the Sorcerer in bombastic red without the clashing of his usual blue tunic. The design on his chest (surrounding the Eye of Agamotto) is dignified in its simplicity, contrasting the costume with an angular white chest piece. Quite a departure from the colorful pot-pourri of his recent ensemble. All in all, it’s a stunning advancement from the original Steve Ditko design which was used as a basis for Doctor Strange’s MCU costume (including the infamous yellow glovesadded for Strange’s cameo in Thor: Ragnarok).

It would be easy for Strange’s MCU upgrade to be directly inspired by the recent comic, especially now that Peter Dinklage’s Nidavellirian forger, Eitri, has been introduced into the movie universe in Infinity War. Although Thanos took Eitri’s hands in that event, the seeds have been sewn for Nidavellirian weapons in the MCU.  Perhaps Eoffren, or a another forger survived Thanos’ attack? Perhaps Nidavellirians survived in another dimension altogether!

Will Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer get a suit upgrade in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness? Could Marvel be teasing an MCU upgrade in the pages of Doctor Strange? “By the Vapors of the Great Valtorr which do all things conceal… ” we’ll just have to wait and see.
