It’s pretty much an impossible task to choose just the one companion on Doctor Who to be named as the absolute best, but we can come up with reasons why certain companions are worthy of that title. Amy Pond happens to be such a character.

Being one of the longer-running companions on “NuWho,” Amy had many memorable moments that highlighted her importance to the Eleventh Doctor. Such was her impact, that you don’t even need to read the additional comics that feature more of Amy’s adventures. That said, here are 10 reasons why Amy might be the best companion the Doctor’s ever had.

10 She Understood The Eleventh Doctor’s Personality

It certainly took a while for characters to really get what the Eleventh Doctor’s personality was like, as he was over a thousand years old yet acted like an innocent child. However, Amy treated his whimsy as an endearing personality trait, rather than judge him for it.

This was most evident when characters like Rory would admonish the Doctor for behaving ambivalently, but Amy would know that he just had a hard time facing his guilt. It was also this reason why she kept a place reserved for the Doctor at Christmas during a time when she hadn’t even seen him for years, yet still predicted he would one day show up.

9 She Embraced Her Motherly Instincts

In some ways, one could consider Amy to be a motherly figure to the Doctor, seeing as his eleventh incarnation needed to do some serious growing up. She was also the first companion we saw actually give birth while still travelling.

Unlike other companions who faced problems like work or studies, Amy grew to be a wife and a mother while retaining her badass tendencies. Even after losing River as a child, she had the motherly instincts when it mattered, such as when she instructed River to look after the Doctor. Finally, she proved to be a wonderful mother when she raised her adopted child after being trapped in the past.

8 Her Love Story With Rory

At the time when Amy had arrived, the “NuWho” version of the show had seen companions either be in love with the Doctor or not have any romantic stories at all. With Amy, we saw these two points reconciled as she had a romance that was both far from perfect yet very loving.

It was the fact that she had her ups and downs with Rory that made her a well-rounded character, as we saw her realize where she needed to appreciate Rory and where she needed to be her own person. The fact that she never acted upon her initial attraction to the Doctor again was what set her apart from other companions like Rose, Martha, and Clara.

7 She Learned From Her Mistakes

A defining point of Amy’s character was when she made up for almost getting the Star Whale killed at the hands of the Doctor. Here, she understood how selfish she had been for letting the whale be controlled by hiding truth, as Amy then came up with the way to free the whale.

Likewise, after having let Rory die for her, Amy grew to have the same kind of selfless love that he did, eventually willing to die with him rather than have him go through with it alone. It’s this kind of character development that’s the point of companions traveling the universe with the Doctor in the first place.

6 Her Role In The Doctor’s Regeneration

Despite Clara being the one physically present for the Eleventh Doctor’s regeneration, it was Amy who brought him the comfort that allowed him to finish the process. And it played out even when Amy wasn’t actually there.

As it happened, the Eleventh Doctor awaited his death but couldn’t find it in him to complete the regeneration. It was then that he hallucinated both the young Amelia and the grown-up Amy, and this provided him with the peace he needed to move on. Even after she’d been dead for centuries, it was Amy who the Doctor remembered the most.

5 Her Partnership With The Doctor

As mentioned before, it was the fact that Amy was a combination of the best traits found in the previous companions that made her such a treat to watch. While Donna had some great dialogue with the Doctor, it had mainly been restricted to taking jabs at each other; the other companions had a more assistant-like relationship with him.

As for Amy, she was the pal the Doctor needed, being both a comforting shoulder for him to cry on and a buddy when he just wanted to have a fun time. She didn’t challenge him to great extents but was level-headed enough to turn the Doctor down when she knew he was wrong.

4 She Made The Doctor Believe In Friendship Once Again

Before he met Amy, the Doctor had spent years on his own trying to forget he’d ever traveled with anyone. The Tenth Doctor admitted he didn’t want companions anymore because he felt they broke his heart when they left, but the Eleventh Doctor instantly took to Amy.

She read him straight away too, claiming that he wanted to take her along because he was lonely. As soon as they began their travels, the Doctor regained his love for adventure and opened himself once again to accept new friends.

3 The Doctor Remembered Her In His Next Incarnation

In case you haven’t noticed, the Doctor tends not to get involved with companions once a new regeneration is in place, even forcing himself not to think about them again. However, Amy is one companion whose name has popped up.

The first instance happened immediately after he turned into the Twelfth Doctor, wishing he had Amy as his companion after Clara wasn’t proving up to the task. He thought of Amy again in the diner he’d been with her before, and finally when he was about to regenerate into the Thirteenth Doctor. The remarkable fact to consider is how these events happened over a thousand years after he last saw her.

2 Being The Girl Who Waited

Almost every companion has had a moniker that they identify with, but we find Amy’s one that displays a great virtue. Even though one would think traveling on the TARDIS would make a person impatient, Amy was someone who had the talent of patience.

This was most evident when we saw the older Amy spend decades on her own, yet still retain her sanity and be selfless enough to let her younger self escape with Rory. Her belief in the Doctor for years, at a time when everyone had told her he’d just been a figment of her imagination, showed how she truly deserved this title.

1 Her Farewell Letter

Easily among the most tear-jerking scenes ever on Doctor Who, we saw Amy’s farewell play out through the foreword she left in her book for the Doctor. Rather than have any resentment for him being the reason she and Rory were trapped in the past, Amy’s last words were written with the Doctor’s best interests at heart.

She could have told him about the many struggles she had to survive in the past, but all she did was assure the Doctor that she still loved him, and to relieve himself of any guilt. After all the pain she endured, Amy learned to live life with no regrets, a lesson she wisely passed on to the Doctor.
