Amy and Rory Pond were the first companions to the Eleventh Doctor, and they were the first married couple to travel onboard the TARDIS. Amy was particularly important as she was the first face that the Eleventh Doctor ever saw, so there was always an important connection between the two.

However, someone equally as close to Amy’s heart was her husband Rory, who had loved Amy ever since the day they met. Over the years, Rory proved himself to Amy and the Doctor time and time again, leaving Amy to make an almost impossible decision: the boy who waited or the man who returned.

10 Rory – He Had Loved Amy Since The Day They Met

This was briefly mentioned, but Rory had always been in love with Amy. As children, Amelia and Melody would play their games and Rory would always get involved. He would do anything for Amelia, even as a child, which shows real commitment.

Rory was so deeply in love with Amy that he never once looked at another woman, right up into his early twenties. Unfortunately, Amy assumed he was gay because of this, but thanks to some prompting from their future daughter, Amy and Rory finally got together.

9 The Doctor – Amy Ran Away With Him On The Night Before Her Wedding

Amy first met the Doctor when she was only 7 years, and they had a miniature adventure together involving the crack on her wall, the Atraxi and Prisoner Zero. The Doctor offered to take her away but never returned, leaving Amelia heartbroken.

Fortunately, the Doctor did return but it was 12 years into Amy’s future. This time, she did go with him, but it was the night before her wedding. If she was so in love with Rory, then why did Amy agree so quickly to fly away with the Doctor when there was a possibility she might never come back?

8 Rory – Amy and Rory’s Daughter Was The Doctor’s Wife

River Song’s backstory was a mystery and it took 3 years and 3 seasons for her to finally reveal who she really was. It transpired that River was actually the daughter of Amy and Rory, and was wife to the Doctor.

Given all that fans know now, if Amy and the Doctor had gotten together, that would make River and the Doctor’s relationship completely icky and wrong. The Doctor would be dating the daughter of the woman he used to love, which is seriously weird.

7 The Doctor – He And Amy Have Known Each Other Since Amy Was A Little Girl

Honestly, this is way less creepy than it sounds. Yes, they did first meet when Amy was a child, but the Doctor went away for 12 years, and when he came back, Amy was all grown up. They even shared a kiss together later on in the season.

Amy’s face was the first face the Eleventh Doctor saw, and so this created a bond between the two. The two know almost everything about each other, and Amy spent a lot of hers wishing the Doctor would come back. And of course, he did.

6 Rory – Amy And The Doctor Were Better As Friends

It was obvious that Amy and the Doctor were only ever meant to be friends. Amy was slightly attracted to him in the beginning, especially after their first encounter with the Weeping Angels in which Amy tried to seduce the Doctor while they were in her bedroom.

It was an awkward seen for viewers to watch, and this prompted the Doctor to reunite Amy with Rory. Although Amy and the Doctor never stopped loving each other, they were never in love with each other and their friendship blossomed because of this.

5 The Doctor – Amy Was Embarrassed By Rory

Rory kind of got a raw deal when it came to his time on Doctor Who. Yes, okay, he got the girl of his dreams and they were (mostly) very happy together, but the way he was treated on occasion left a lot to be desired. Amy wasn’t always the best girlfriend.

When Rory and the Doctor first met, it was a little bit awkward, as Amy introduced Rory as her friend, forcing Rory to correct her. This made Amy appear as though she was embarrassed of having ‘settled’ for Rory, when really, the two were total equals.

4 Rory – He And Amy Died For Each Other

Amy and Rory’s final episode as series regulars was absolutely heartbreaking. It featured the return of the Weeping Angels, assassins that sent you back in time and fed on the days you should have lived. Viewers therefore knew that there would be tears before bedtime.

The gang had already witnessed Rory dying as an old man in the past, so to stop the Weeping Angels, the Ponds decided to die together before Rory’s death, creating a paradox that would kill the Angels. The fact that Amy wouldn’t let Rory die alone is what made them such a good couple.

3 The Doctor – He And Amy Loved Each Other

While they may not have been in love with each other, there’s no denying that the Doctor and Amy shared a huge amount of affection for each other. The Doctor loved Rory too, but Amy was the first person who he travelled with for a while, and that meant something.

Amy and Rory got married in the Season 5 finale, and they continued to travel with the Doctor and have adventures. However, during this time, Rory still felt like the third wheel to Amy and the Doctor, whether intentionally or not.

2 Rory – He Waited For Over 2000 For Amy

Amy was known over the course of her time on Doctor Who as The Girl Who Waited, because she waited 14 years to finally go travelling with the Doctor. However, the true King of Patience was Rory Williams, who protected Amy for over 2000 years while she was in the Pandorica.

By this point in the series, Rory was a plastic Auton, originally controlled by the Nestene Consciousness until he broke free of its control. As such, he didn’t age and was able to guard Amy with his life, dragging her from danger year after year.

1 The Doctor – Rory Died

As any good Doctor Who fan should know, Rory died a lot. In his last ever episode, he technically died three times! By Season 7 of the show, Amy and Rory were a solid couple who trusted and supported each other unequivocally.

However, Rory kept on dying, right through Season 5 all the way to the seventh season. It hurt Amy so bad every time, so bad, in fact, that she could have saved herself a lot of pain if she’d been with the Doctor, as Time Lords can regenerate and heal themselves.
