When Clara Oswald was first introduced as the new companion back in Season 7, her main storyline consisted of finding out who she was. The Doctor had encountered her a couple of times but every time, she died saving his life. Needless to say, the Doctor was intrigued, and even a little bit wary.

After the Doctor solved the mystery of the Impossible Girl, though, he and Clara grew closer. Before anything could happen, however, the Doctor regenerated and Clara met Danny Pink, who she soon fell in love with. This left fans wondering whether the Doctor or Danny was better for Clara.

10 Danny – He Forgave Clara After She Lied To Him

Danny and Clara’s relationship was one of the main plot points of Season 8, after they met briefly in “Into The Dalek”. Their relationship was going really well, until Danny met the Doctor. The two men really didn’t like each other.

After the Doctor abandoned her, she refused to travel with him again, but quickly changed her mind. However, she lied to Danny about her adventures. Fortunately, when Danny found out, his response was incredibly mature, and he forgave her as long as she promised to tell him everything.

9 The Doctor – Clara Lied To Danny

Despite a rough start, Clara was actually a great companion. During her first season on the show, her character was dominated by the Impossible Girl arc, so viewers didn’t get a chance to know her properly. That all changed in the following season.

In Season 8, Clara was placed in front and centre of the show. Viewers found out more about her life on Earth, and watched as she fell in love with Danny. However, Danny and the Doctor didn’t like each other so Clara lied to Danny about her travels, choosing the Doctor over her boyfriend.

8 Danny – He Saved The World

After the Doctor regenerated, he and Clara changed the dynamic of their relationship. Previously, Clara and the Eleventh Doctor had been secretly attracted to one another, but with the arrival of the Twelfth Doctor, they became the very best of friends.

The Doctor was extremely protective of Clara, and so he made sure that anyone who got close to her had to be worth it. Danny Pink was always worthy, but he proved it when he sacrificed himself to save Clara, with planet Earth simply acting as collateral damage.

7 The Doctor – He And Clara Were Adorable Together

Clara travelled with both the Eleventh and Twelfth incarnations of the Doctor and, like Rose Tyler, her relationship with both Doctors was simply adorable. In Season 7, she and the Doctor had a cute, occasionally flirtatious relationship which was just hilarious.

When the Doctor regenerated, after a slight adjustment period, he and Clara built a relationship together that was basically a platonic endgame. They always had each other’s back and both of them would do just about anything to save the other.

6 Danny – The Doctor Regenerated

Although Clara and the Eleventh Doctor didn’t get a chance to spend a lot of time together, they did have enough time to begin to form a relationship. It was clear that they both fancied each other but no one knew whether they’d ever act on it.

Before anything could happen, the Doctor regenerated in the Twelfth Doctor. This Doctor was older, but that wasn’t why their relationship changed. The Doctor had become angrier, meaner and ruder, and Clara initially couldn’t find anything about him that she liked.

5 The Doctor – He Was Clara’s Equal

Part of the reason why the Doctor and Clara had such an amazing friendship was because they were actually quite similar. They both had a deep passion for adventure, and they were both as zany as each other. Everyone thought they were the perfect match.

Part of a good relationship is that both sides aren’t afraid to disagree with the other if they think they’re wrong. Clara and the Doctor did this quite a lot, but Danny, while nice, always seemed to go along with whatever Clara wanted, even after she lied to him.

4 Danny – He Was Always Supportive

To be fair, the Eleventh Doctor was also extremely supportive of Clara’s decisions, although he did hide the fact that he had met versions of her before. When he regenerated, though, the Doctor became more selfish and cruel towards Clara, often dismissing her entirely.

During this adjustment period, Clara met Danny who was automatically a breath of fresh air. He was kind, cheerful and awkward, the complete opposite to the Doctor. When he found out about Clara’s double life, he supported her when she went off with the Doctor.

3 The Doctor – They Travelled Through Time And Space

The Doctor, in whatever incarnation, is always looking for adventure wherever and whenever they can find it, which is why Doctor Who remains so popular to this day. it’s also the reason why many companions of old find it hard to return to their normal lives.

Clara was missing something in her life so when the Doctor appeared on her doorstep offering to whisk her away to another time and place, she could hardly refuse. Danny was a sweet guy but he had already had his adventure and was just looking to have a normal life.

2 Danny – He Made Clara Care About Normal Life

During her travels with the Doctor, Clara became more and more distant from her past life, always leaving her teaching job to go travelling with the Doctor in the TARDIS. She was getting further away from who she was until she met Danny Pink.

Danny was there to remind Clara that there were great adventures to be had back home as well. In Season 8, Danny reminded Clara that her friends and family back home were just as important as the Doctor, which was something Clara needed to learn.

1 The Doctor – Clara Knew Him Better Than Anyone

The Doctor had a bit of an unfair advantage over Danny here, as not only had Clara known him for longer, but she had also jumped into his personal time stream and had basically witnessed every pivotal moment of the Doctor’s life.

This meant that Clara essentially knew everything about the Doctor, a feat to which not many people can claim. This created a special bond between Clara and the Doctor, which lead to Clara unintentionally choosing the Doctor over Danny during the Season 8 finale.
