Is there a Dune after-credits scene setting up the next part of Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel? Dune will cover the first half of Herbert’s epic tome, telling the story of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, heir to House Atreides, one of the most powerful families in the feudal-like galaxy. Warner Bros. looks to be banking on Dune as their next big sci-fi franchise, but they have yet to greenlight a sequel.

Villeneuve had originally hoped to film both parts of Dune back-to-back, but Warner Bros. did not give the go-ahead for this plan. Instead, they are waiting to see how the first film performs before starting production on Dune 2. Still, Villeneuve has made it very clear that he is ready to start filming the sequel as soon as he is given the greenlight, with work already started on the Dune 2 casting process, script, and pre-production for what promises to be an even bigger film than the first.

While it may seem like the perfect opportunity to set up the highly anticipated follow-up, both for fans of the novel and newcomers to the world of the film, Dune does not have an after-credits scene. The film does conclude on an open-ended note though, with Zendaya’s Chani ironically telling Timothee Chalamet’s Paul, “This is only the beginning.” The ending of Dune certainly teases a potential sequel, but there is no further indication of what will be coming next at the end of the movie.

Despite the fact there isn’t a Dune post-credits scene teasing Dune 2, there’s plenty in the film itself that previews what’s ahead for Paul Atreides and the people of Arrakis. Much of Dune is comprised of prophetic dream sequences seen by Paul in his sleep. These dreams tease the future of his character and while none of them come after the conclusion of the film, they certainly hint at what’s in store for the universe.

Post-credits scenes have become commonplace in today’s blockbuster landscape, and audiences are now trained to stick around after a blockbuster rolls credits in hopes they will get a tease of what’s coming next. While it seemed possible that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune would have a post-credits scene, its elaborate story does not necessarily lend itself easily to brief teases. What exactly Villeneuve could’ve included in a Dune after-credits scene remains unclear and while it’s possible he had something in mind,  it seems more likely that it already made the final cut of the film. Throughout Dune, Paul’s dreams are a major part of the story and they are tease enough for what will happen next time, allowing Villeneuve to end the film definitively.
