There’s a lot to like about the Galaxy A53 5G, but does Samsung’s latest budget phone come with wireless charging? When people think about Samsung smartphones, the conversation often revolves around the company’s most expensive handsets. The Galaxy S22 offers flagship specs for just $799, the S22 Ultra combines a Galaxy S flagship and a Note into one device, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 lets you fit a 7-inch tablet right in your pocket. As much fun as these premium handsets are to talk about, they aren’t the ones that most people are buying.

Instead, that title belongs to Samsung’s more affordable ‘Galaxy A’ smartphones. The Galaxy A51 was the best-selling Android phone in 2020, while the Galaxy A12 was the best-selling Android phone in 2021. For 2022, Samsung’s hoping it can grab that title once more with the Galaxy A53 5G. Available in the U.S. for $449, the A53 5G has a pretty impressive spec sheet for the price. It delivers a 6.5-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, four rear cameras, a 32MP selfie camera, and ships with Android 12 out of the box. Even better, Samsung promises that the A53 5G will get four years of major OS updates and five years of security patches — surpassing the software support of Google’s Pixel 6 series.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As with any smartphone, two of the most critical aspects of the Galaxy A53 5G are battery life and charging. For the battery side of things, the A53 5G comes with a 5000 mAh capacity. Samsung says that’s enough to give the A53 5G “two-day battery life” and is the same capacity found in the much more expensive Galaxy S22 Ultra. Unfortunately, the charging experience is pretty disappointing. Although wireless charging is an increasingly common smartphone feature in 2022, the Galaxy A53 5G does not support wireless charging. Wireless charging wasn’t present on the A51 or A52, so it’s not a huge surprise that the A53 5G doesn’t have the feature either. That said, it’s still a bummer for anyone who likes having the functionality.

The Galaxy A53 5G Only Has Wired Charging

With no wireless charging in sight, the Galaxy A53 5G relies exclusively on wired charging. It does so with its USB-C port and is capable of wired charging speeds up to 25W. Samsung calls this ‘Super Fast Charging,’ but 25W is now on the slower side of things. It’s certainly not terrible for a $449 handset, but in a world where other devices have 45W, 65W, and even 150W charging, 25W isn’t as impressive as it once used to be.

It’s upsetting not to have wireless charging on the Galaxy A53 5G. But is there hope that wireless charging will come to the inevitable A54 in 2023? That’s a tricky question to answer. As it currently stands, Samsung has yet to release a Galaxy A device with wireless charging support. While Galaxy A phones get yearly upgrades to their processor, display, camera, etc., wireless charging has remained exclusive to more expensive handsets like the Galaxy S, Galaxy Z, and Note lineups. That’s not to say there will never be a Samsung Galaxy A with wireless charging, but the Galaxy A53 5G isn’t the phone that changes this.
