SD card slots for expandable storage are increasingly rare on modern smartphones and tablets. But is this something Samsung was able to preserve for its Galaxy Tab S8 series? The consumer tech space moves at an incredibly rapid pace. Specs become more powerful, new features get added, and old trends are pushed aside in favor of new ones. Instead of 3.5mm headphone jacks and physical keyboards being the norm on smartphones, shoppers now expect bezel-less displays and huge camera bumps.

With the Galaxy Tab S8 lineup, it’s obvious that Samsung tried making its newest tablets as modern and capable as possible. Each one has a 120Hz display with slim bezels, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, a large battery, and so on. There are also three distinct options to choose from. You can get the Galaxy Tab S8 for $699, step up to the $899 Galaxy Tab S8+, or go all-out with the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra for $1099.

Despite Samsung’s focus on modernizing its tablet offerings, it made sure to retain one older feature that isn’t seen too often: expandable storage. All three versions of the Galaxy Tab S8 come with an SD card slot to quickly expand their internal memory. Whether someone plans on keeping a lot of games, movies, or music saved on their tablet, being able to expand its storage in the blink of an eye is extremely convenient.

Digging a bit deeper into the storage situation for the Tab S8, the available space out of the box is pretty good. All three tablets start with a base storage amount of 128GB. That’s plenty of space for most folks to get started, but if you do run out of room, adding more of it is just one microSD card away. If you want more built-in storage, the Tab S8, S8+, and S8 Ultra can all be upgraded to 256GB. From there, the Tab S8 Ultra also has a 512GB storage configuration.

Are those storage upgrades worth it? For the Tab S8 and S8+, going from 128 to 256GB adds an additional $80. For the Tab S8 Ultra, the 256GB model costs an extra $100. That’s a lot of money for another 128GB of space, but keep in mind that jumping to 256GB on every model also increases the RAM from 8GB to 12GB. Furthermore, splurging for the Tab S8 Ultra’s 512GB variant further increases the RAM to 16GB.

While those RAM boosts are nice to have, adding more storage with an SD card is substantially more affordable. 128GB microSD cards are often available for around $20, 256GB cards usually cost $30, and you can often find 512GB ones for $60. The best part? All three Galaxy Tab S8 models support expandable storage up to 1TB, so there’s plenty of room for you to grow into. Power-users who demand a lot of their tablet may still be better off with getting more internal storage and additional RAM, but for everyone else, Samsung’s use of an SD card slot offers a better (and cheaper) solution.
