The latest installment in the WWE 2K franchise, WWE 2K22, was released in March 2022 for PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, with players hopeful that cross-play between platforms would be possible. Cross-generation play is possible, meaning that players on next-gen consoles can play with their friends on older consoles, as long as they are different generations of the same console. Unfortunately, that’s as far as cross-platform support goes for WWE 2K22, which may come as a disappointment.

After the widespread criticism of WWE 2K20, the game’s creators 2K Sports and Visual Concepts decided to cancel the planned sequel. Instead, they went back to the drawing board to ensure the next installment of the series didn’t receive the same less than favorable reception as its predecessor. So far, WWE 2K22 has received generally positive reviews, with the game receiving praise for being more polished than its predecessor, and for making several notable improvements across its single-player gameplay modes.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Despite being released on multiple platforms from day one, WWE 2K22 does not support crossplay between different platforms in online multiplayer mode. Therefore, PC players are unable to play online multiplayer mode with their friends on consoles. Additionally, players on PlayStation and Xbox are unable to play with each other. Even though cross-platform support is common for online multiplayer in video games, it isn’t surprising that the latest WWE 2K game doesn’t have cross-platform support. WWE 2K22‘s developer, 2K Sports, has a track record of not supporting cross-platform play, including the latest installment of its highly successful NBA 2K games, NBA 2K22, despite pleas from its player base.

WWE 2K22 – Community Creations Are Shared Across Platforms

Although the latest WWE game doesn’t offer cross-platform play, one redeeming factor of WWE 2K22 is its community creations, which can be accessed universally across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles regardless of which platform they were created on. Players can upload their own custom creations for other players to enjoy. In WWE 2K22, there are 10 different categories of community creations including Superstars character creation, Arenas, and even Custom Matches. The robust character creation mode has seen players create in-game models of wrestlers who are no longer in WWE, celebrity lookalikes, and superheroes, all uploaded online for the community to enjoy.

While WWE 2K22 doesn’t offer cross-platform support for online multiplayer currently, hopefully, 2K Sports will hear its players’ requests for cross-platform support and decide to implement it in the near future. Fortunately, players on different generations of the same console, such as players on PlayStation 4 and 5, can play with each other in online multiplayer thanks to cross-generation support. In the meantime, as they wait for WWE 2K‘s first cross-platform game, WWE 2K22 players can enjoy perusing the catalog of fan-made creations or opt to create their own playable WWE stars to share with others.
