The Three Caballeros are known for their globe-trotting adventures, and now, Donald Duck and his feathered friends will star in a new Disney manga that will send them to Japan. Donald Duck Visits Japan! is an upcoming story from TokyoPop that puts this trio of entrepreneurs in a new place. They may like to hang out in Latin countries, but things are swiftly changing in their lives thanks to their jobs.

The Three Caballeros’ history largely goes back to the 1944 film of the same name. The group is made up of Donald Duck, José Carioca, and Panchito Pistoles. José is a parrot from Brazil who was previously introduced in Saludos Amigos in 1942, while Panchito is a rooster from Mexico. Together, they join up with Donald Duck to teach him about Latin America while celebrating his birthday. Since then, the trio have banded together for other adventures in various Disney media, including an appearance in DuckTales (2017), the animated series Legend of the Three Caballeros (2018), and the 2007 Walt Disney World attraction: Gran Fiesta Tour.

As announced in a press release from TokyoPop, Donald Duck Visits Japan! will be written and illustrated by Meru Okada. It will place Disney’s bird trio in Japan, where they will learn about the culture, food, customs, and clothing of the country throughout the manga. At present, they are living in New York City, so the move will likely bring about some nerves, but nothing these feathered friends can’t handle when they’re all together. This original manga will be the newest adventure for the group in a few years, making it particularly notable. Enjoy the synopsis and non-finalized cover below:

Donald Duck works for the American furniture business “Duck Furnishings”. It’s been two months since he and his employees, José Carioca and Panchito Pistoles, were reassigned to the Asian Culture and Distribution Department, and the phone hasn’t rung even once.

Just as they’re starting to wonder why they were transferred in the first place, the CEO suddenly orders them to travel to Japan! The three caballeros must learn all they can about Japanese customs, entertainment, culture, food, and clothing before they return to New York City. Assuming they don’t get into too much trouble first!

Disney has released numerous manga series via TokyoPop, adding new stories about the company’s most popular characters and incorporating new twists. Some of the original stories have included sending Lilo & Stitch’s Stitch to feudal Japan, telling new Nightmare Before Christmas stories about Sally and Zero. TokyoPop has also released several adaptations of films in manga form, such as Pixar’s Wall-E, Pixar’s Toy Story, and Tangled. This past year, Disney released an original manga which tells a new story set in the world of the Disney Channel Original Movie, Descendants. It centers on Mal, Audrey, and Uma after the end of Descendants 3. Donald Duck’s upcoming adventure will be the newest addition to TokyoPop’s line-up.

The Three Caballeros have long been an underrated trio, so it’s surprising to see that they’ll be starring in a new adventure soon. Additionally, they are most commonly associated with Latin America, and Mexico in particular thanks to the park attraction. However, this manga is a great thematic partner to the ride in many ways. The entire premise of Walt Disney World’s Gran Fiesta Tour is that guests will learn about Mexico’s culture and arts while sightseeing with Donald before a reunion concert put on by him and his friends, José and Panchito. It would be wonderful to see Disney’s Three Caballeros explore even more countries in various mediums now that Japan has been added to their itinerary via manga. Disney fans will be able to read the Three Caballeros‘ newest adventure when Donald Duck Visits Japan! releases on May 31.
