H1Z1 won’t release on the Xbox One anytime soon – and it’s unclear exactly when a full release will come for the PS4 version either. Daybreak Games announced this morning that their recently-released (though long-in-development) battle royale game, H1Z1, is finally coming to the PS4, even though the release was initially announced more than two years ago. It’s the game’s first console version, which is why the studio went to great lengths to make sure that it appeals to console players.

The H1Z1 PS4 version will see updated gameplay that have been designed specifically for consumers who are used to console shooters like Call of Duty. That means a familiar controller layout, quicker matches, updated weapon mechanics, and more. It all sounds great in theory and just might be what Daybreak Games needs to return to their once pride and glory, but it seems only PS4 players will get the chance to play this new version of the formerly dominant battle royale game.

Screen Rant attended Daybreak Games’ H1Z1 PS4 preview event this past weekend in Las Vegas, where Daybreak’s Lead Systems Designer, Tony Morton, told us that they are just focused on the PS4 version right now when asked about a potential Xbox One release down the line:

“Of course, of course. Right now, our focus is the PlayStation 4. Once it is out and we’re happy with the state of it on PS4, we’re always open to exploring other platforms. It’s just, for right now in the short-term, our focus is PS4.”

Although it’s a vague answer, it’s easy to deduce that consumers shouldn’t expect to see an Xbox One version anytime soon, not that it couldn’t still happen at some point in the future. Seeing as H1Z1 is only now finally being adapted to the PS4, it may take some time before the game is officially released in its completed state. Remember, the game is only going into open beta on May 22, with no currently announced launch timetable. Plus, it’s worth noting that Daybreak was originally Sony Online Entertainment, so their dedicated console development team has plenty of experience developing for the PS4, but not so much on the Xbox One.

Considering that H1Z1 doesn’t have the sustainable player base that it once used to have on the PC, especially given the rise of other battle royale titles like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, releasing the game on PS4 is a smart move and just might save them. However, it really just means that PS4 players who don’t want to play Fortnite can try out H1Z1 instead, while Xbox One players have PUBG in addition to Fortnite as well. If H1Z1 released on the Xbox, then it would have an edge over at least PUBG, which is arguably their most direct competitor.
