The Umbrella Academy is ending with its fourth season, but the stories from this unique world can still continue after that – here’s how. The rise of the superhero genre has made way for a variety of stories, some of them darker and aimed at a more mature audience, and among those is The Umbrella Academy, created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. The Umbrella Academy made the jump to the world of streaming in 2019 thanks to Netflix, becoming one of its most popular titles, and it’s now preparing for its fourth and final season.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven adopted siblings who, along with other 36 babies around the world, were born on the same day, at the same time, and under the same mysterious circumstances. Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of those children and trained them as they developed superpowers, forming the superhero team “The Umbrella Academy”. However, Reginald wasn’t a good father, and the Hargreeves ended up parting ways, but reunited years later for Reginald’s funeral and to stop the apocalypse. That was the beginning of a complex journey for the Umbrella Academy, in which they had dealt with three ends of the world, time travel, a different team, and Reginald himself.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 ended on a major cliffhanger as Reginald reset the timeline before being killed by Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), leaving the Umbrellas and the surviving members of the Sparrow Academy in a new timeline where Reginald has full control and they no longer have powers. Season 4, then, has a lot of mysteries and questions to solve, and while it will bring the Hargreeves’ stories to an end, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the end of the world of The Umbrella Academy, as it can continue through spinoffs.

Will There Be Umbrella Academy Spinoffs?

Although it’s to be seen where season 4 will take the Hargreeves (both Umbrellas and Sparrows), The Umbrella Academy already has potential and options for a couple of spinoffs, if the people involved in the series wish to continue. In 2019, Gerard Way and Scott Allie wrote a spinoff series titled Tales from the Umbrella Academy, and it was launched with a one-shot issue titled “Hazel and Cha-Cha Save Christmas”. The Umbrella Academy season 1 introduced Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige), two time-traveling assassins working for The Commission who are sent to kill Five (Aidan Gallagher) as ordered by The Handler (Kate Walsh). After many obstacles and problems between them, Cha-Cha died in the 2019 apocalypse and Hazel ran away with Agnes thanks to one of The Commission’s briefcases, and briefly returned at the beginning of season 2, where he was killed by the Swedes. If The Umbrella Academy continues after season 4, Hazel and Cha-Cha could be the stars of their own spinoff, allowing viewers to see more of them and their dynamic before they fell apart, as well as how The Commission used to work before the events of the series.

Of course, The Umbrella Academy could also have spinoffs focused on some of the members of the title team. Klaus (Robert Sheehan) starred in a miniseries titled Tales from the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death, set about a decade before the events of Apocalypse Suite, and it followed Number Four after crossing a vampire drug lord. Another character who could easily lead his own spinoff TV series is Five, as there’s a lot to learn about him due to all those years he spent apart from his family, and with season 3 revealing he’s the founder of The Commission, there are many questions to answer about his life. As Netflix takes its time to greenlight and announce its projects, for now The Umbrella Academy is set to end with its fourth season and there are no plans for spinoffs, but if the final season proves to be successful, it wouldn’t be surprising if some characters return in their own shows.
