Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Doom Patrol season 3, episode 4, “Undead Patrol.”

The closing credits of Doom Patrolseason 3, episode 4, contained a mid-credits scene that introduced a new zombie menace to threaten the town of Cloverton. The brief scene proved a fitting conclusion for the episode “Undead Patrol.” However, it also hinted the World’s Strangest Heroes may not yet be done with their dealings with the dead.

The story of “Undead Patrol” was packed full of monsters as the five core members of the Doom Patrol found themselves transformed into brain-craving zombies. Precisely how this happened was never made clear. Still, it was believed to be due to a botched resurrection arranged by the Dead Boy Detectives after the Doom Patrol escaped the afterlife in the previous episode, “Dead Patrol.” Whatever the cause, the zombie Doom Patrol was still pressed into action to rescue the severed head of Niles Caulder (Timothy Dalton) from Agent Darren Jones (Jon Briddell) of the Bureau of Normalcy. Jones was revealed to have undergone a horrible transformation of his own, having been transformed into a were-butt sometime after seemingly being devoured by the strange monsters called Butts, which resembled ambulatory human backsides with fanged mouths.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The zombie Doom Patrol were able to defeat Jones and the horde of Butts that he summoned with his howls and were seemingly returned to normal. However, the post-credits scene of “Undead Patrol” revealed something gross and disturbing, even by Doom Patrol standards. One of the Butts had escaped the battle and apparently became infected with the zombie curse that plagued the Doom Patrol. The Butt hissed the word “brains,” which was unusual as this was the first time a Butt was shown to be capable of speech. The Zombie Butt was then shown to be running down the road to Cloverton, which is the small town that frequently suffers because of their proximity to Doom Manor.

It is hard to say whether or not this mid-credits scene is meant to set up a future Doom Patrol storyline or if it was just mimicking the general horror-movie aesthetic of the episode, showing the monster running off to return another day. Either one is honestly likely, as Doom Patrol has a history of setting up jokes that are later used to advance the story (such as Flex Mentallo’s orgasm generating powers) and introducing strange non-sequiturs as one-off gags that are never referenced again. Until “Undead Patrol,” it seemed unlikely that the Butts would return, having made a single appearance as a deus ex machina in the Doom Patrol season 1 episode “Cyborg Patrol,” where they randomly appeared and attacked Darren Jones and his followers after they captured the Doom Patrol and had seemingly won.

In either case, Doom Patrol has once again proven that it still retains the capacity to surprise, disgust, and (above all) amuse its audience. Whatever else may be said about “Undead Patrol,” which also featured a perverted sorcerer and amnesiac time-traveler among Doom Patrol‘s colorful cast of characters, it was never dull. Even if the Zombie Butt does not return to hinder (or should that be hinder?) the Doom Patrol again, the mid-credits scene introducing it was, much like the Zombie Butt, an amusing end.
