Warning: Contains spoilers for Doom Patrol season 3 episode 10.

The Doom Patrol season 3 finale finished up a major arc, but there are still a lot of questions that can be answered with a renewal for season 4. The Doom Patrol have plenty of stories left to tell, and it’s likely that season 4 will only amp up the surreality that the series thrives on. Here’s all the news about Doom Patrol season 4, its cast, story, and release date.

Doom Patrol follows a group of superpowered misfits as they struggle with their own traumas and identity crises and sometimes end up saving the world as well. Doom Patrol season 3 saw the Doom Patrol deal with the fallout of season 2 and the candlemaker, a trip to the afterlife, and a faceoff against their own subconsciouses in the Eternal Flagellation. The finale blurs the lines between good and evil as Laura De Mille and Rita Farr both walk a delicate line.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While the Doom Patrol season 3 finale was less of a cliffhanger than the ending to either season 1 or season 2, it has left a lot of unanswered questions. Doom Patrol has built a fully-fleshed-out world with plenty of secondary and tertiary characters who could make additional appearances to continue their story. So, has Doom Patrol been renewed for season 4, and what could that mean for the show.

Doom Patrol Has Been Renewed For Season 4

Doom Patrol season 4 was officially announced in October 2021 as part of DC FanDome when only 6 of the 10 episodes for season 3 had aired. The news came alongside a similar announcement for its sister show, Titans, which will also receive a fourth season. Doom Patrol season 3 was the first to air on HBO Max after the dissolution of the DC Universe streaming platform and its greater accessibility could see the show garner more fans.

What We Know About Doom Patrol Season 4’s Cast & Story

While the Doom Patrol season 4 cast and story have not yet been confirmed, the season 3 finale suggests that the central team will return including Rita Farr (April Bowlby), Larry Trainor (Matthew Zuk/Matt Bomer), Cyborg (Jovian Wade), Jane (Diane Guerrero), and Kay’s alters. While Brendan Fraser will return as Cliff Steele, it is unclear whether Riley Shanahan will return as Robotman’s body given that particular body was largely destroyed. A notable addition to the main cast is Michelle Gomez’s Laura De Mille, while Timothy Dalton’s Niles Calder is unlikely to return from what appears to be a permanent death.

The story is likely to continue much of the character progression that has previously been established on an individual level for the team. However, the Doom Patrol themselves will be embarking upon bigger missions as they have finally come together to acknowledge themselves as a super team in the season 3 finale. Danny the Ambulance and Willoughby Kipling (Mark Sheppard) are likely to crop up again, potentially with Dorothy (Abi Monterey) and the Dead Boy Detectives also making an appearance.

How Doom Patrol Season 3 Sets Up Season 4

Doom Patrol season 4’s plot is set up to follow on from the mild cliffhanger that ends season 3 as the team enter Robotman’s new giant body and travel through time and space to defend the Suez Canal from a new monster. The season will have to deal with some big issues left by season 3, including how Robotman might attain a new, smaller body, whether Rita Farr is now a villain, and whether Laura De Mille can truly be a hero.

Doom Patrol Season 4’s Potential Release Date

The Doom Patrol season 4 release date has not been announced yet. Season 1 aired in February 2019, season 2 in June 2020, and season 3 in September 2021. Based on this schedule – and potential further delays from the COVID-19 pandemic – Doom Patrol season 4 will likely release in the summer or fall of 2022, most probably around September or October.
