Disney and Pixar just unleashed the first movie trailer for Lightyear, and fans have already discovered that the DOOM soundtrack offers surprisingly great background music. Mick Gordon’s work on the DOOM OST is the stuff of legend. Somehow, he managed to imbue the music with an intensity that perfectly matched the over-the-top on-screen action that pervaded DOOM 2016. And though Gordon wasn’t as involved in the mixing process for DOOM Eternal’s OST, it, too, is an impressive piece of work.

Considered the father of first-person shooters, DOOM hit the scene in 1993 with a whole host of gameplay innovations. In many respects, the id Software-created franchise enjoyed a long reign, though many of its installments following the turn of the century left a lot to be desired. Id Software went back to the drawing board several years ago, culminating in the 2016 reboot that perfectly exemplified why this particular FPS franchise remains in a league of its own. And as players can attest, music featured in the DOOM soundtrack punctuated the overall experience at every turn.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Disney and Pixar recently dropped the first trailer for Lightyear, a Chris Evans-starring animated film that follows the adventures of Toy Story hero Buzz Lightyear. The teaser’s music effectively immerses viewers in every moment of the spacefaring action, but one fan felt the need to spice things up a bit with a trailer edit. Freelance gaming journalist and Twitter user Darrangedd synced music from the DOOM soundtrack with a section of the Lightyear teaser wherein the titular character takes to the skies in a rocket ship. As Darrangedd notes, the two make for a “perfectmatch.” Check it out in the video linked below:

It’s fitting that the two work well together. DOOM’s gaming history icon Doom Slayer and Buzz Lightyear bear a few things in common – kind of. Both don iconic suits that ensure their survival beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Each one wears an easily identifiable helmet, too. And since Doom Slayer’s visited Mars, who’s to say Buzz hasn’t made a similar trip to the Red Planet once or twice?

DOOM Eternal, the most recent entry in the long-running series, hit store shelves in March 2020. Id Software’s support of the shooter has yet to cease, though; in fact, DOOM Etnernal’s latest 6.66 update went live earlier in October, introducing Battlemode 2.0 and Horde Mode.

DOOM Eternal is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S; Lightyear will blast into theaters in Summer 2022.
