WARNING: Spoilers for DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1.

DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1 ends with absolute chaos, so what exactly is happening with Invoker and the Goddess Selemene? The specifics may seem obvious to fans of the video games that the world of DOTA: Dragon’s Blood is based on; however, casual Netflix streamers may have trouble understanding the bigger picture. Here’s how the romance between Invoker and Goddess Selemene in DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1 links to an ancient prophecy.

In DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1, a group of elves known as the Coriel ‘Tauvi steal water lilies from the Nightsilver Woods. The lotuses represent the “the unfettered power” of a former Goddess named Mene — a gift for her true believers — so the Princess of the Moon, Mirana (Lara Pulver), hopes to find them with the assistance of a sage named Invoker (Troy Baker). According to the Oracle’s Prophecy, the stolen lotuses will help the Coriel ‘Tauvi find their true home, but will also lead to the demise of the current Goddess, Selemene (Alix Wilton Regan). DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1 centers on a power struggle and sets up storylines about characters who could fulfill the ancient prophecy, or perhaps even destroy the world.

DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1 reveals that the Coriel ‘Tauvi turned on the Dark Moon Order for moral reasons. Specifically, they’re upset that the Goddess abandoned her daughter, Filomena, who died from an infection after refusing to worship her own mother. This complicates the narrative because Selemene understands the future implications which are foreshadowed in the Oracle’s Prophecy: she’ll be killed after the lotuses are stolen by a faction of non-believers. The big twist is that Filomena’s father is the sage Invoker, who reveals in the fourth episode that he’s in possession of the lotuses. Because the Goddess Selemene demands that everyone worship her — even her own lover and daughter — she inadvertently plays a major role in the prophecy’s fulfillment.

During the penultimate episode of DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1, “Speak the Words,” a flashback sequence shows that Selemene flat-out refuses to save her own child, Filomena. The moment underlines the Goddess’ arrogance that unnerves the Coriel ‘Tauvi so much, but also emphasizes the importance of Invoker’s perspective. Selemene questions his love, which prompts the sage to make a deal with the demon Terrorblade (JB Blanc). In exchange for seven souls, Invoker will receive the soul of his former lover, the Goddess. When chaos erupts in the DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1 finale, it’s because the sage put a curse on the box of lotuses, which prevents Selemene from making a peaceful deal with the Coriel ‘Tauvi.

DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1 concludes with Invoker looming over a dying Selemene and stating “Do you love me?” — a callback to the penultimate episode when the Goddess asks the same question before abandoning her daughter. The moment is especially important for future episodes because it implies that the sage could actually be the Devil — an accusation that’s made by Princess Mirana. Of course, Terrorblade appears to the main villain in the narrative thus far, but the uncertainty about Invoker and his motivations will undoubtedly have major implications for characters like Davion (Yuri Lowenthal) and Princess Mirana, the two primary protagonists. Terrorblade is the obvious villain in DOTA: Dragon’s Blood season 1, and Goddess Selemene’s past actions are clearly problematic, but the narrative wildcard is Invoker; an all-powerful figure whose grief could result in an apocalyptic event.
