Renewed interest has been given to BioWare’s Dragon Age franchise after the success of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, leading many to wonder whether a remaster will be provided for the fantasy RPG series as well. Some have even speculated that the apparent lack of progress in Dragon Age 4‘s development could mean that an upcoming remaster is already in the works. How likely is it that the Dragon Age series will be remastered before the release of DA4?

Dragon Age 4 has been in development for years now, although an official release date has yet to be provided. A few story details have already been revealed, such as the return of characters like Solas and even the setting of the game. Thus far, though, little is known about DA4‘s gameplay. With 2021’s EA Play Live coming up this July, it seems likely that a more in-depth look at the game will finally be provided, and perhaps a release window will even be confirmed.

Earlier this year BioWare also re-released their sci-fi RPG trilogy Mass Effect in the remastered form of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, the success of which drew new focus to the studio after its recent failures, Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda. It’s lead to some discussions regarding the likelihood of a Dragon Age remaster. Although Dragon Age: Inquisition is only a few years old, earlier games like Dragon Age: Origins could strongly benefit from overhauled graphics and gameplay.

How Soon Could A Dragon Age Remaster Be Announced?

It’s possible to piece together some sort of timeline regarding Dragon Age‘s upcoming releases by looking at the example set by Mass Effect Legendary Edition and the still-in-development Mass Effect 4. Although the Mass Effect trilogy’s remaster was leaked several times before it was officially announced, the news of its release came out just a few months before the first trailer dropped for ME4. In contrast, Dragon Age 4 has seen the release of several trailers since as early as 2018. Although progress on the game is seemingly slow, it appears likely that by now it might be nearing the announcement of a release date.

This makes it highly unlikely that a remaster will be coming out before Dragon Age 4 does. Unless BioWare has been working on a remastered version of the first three games in secret for some time now, it’s more probable that such a project won’t appear until later on down the line. Additionally, BioWare may have been waiting to see how successful Mass Effect Legendary Edition was before moving forward with any plans to overhaul the Dragon Age games. While it’s possible that it could be revealed during EA Play next month, it remains far more likely that the Dragon Age series’ only news will all involve the status of DA4.
