BioWare’s fantasy RPG series Dragon Age has a wide range of classes to choose from, each of which has unique benefits and drawbacks. Between Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age: Inquisition, the franchise has also gone through several different styles of combat and gameplay, which can at times make it difficult to keep track of which class is most effective throughout the different titles in the franchise.

With the long-awaited release of Dragon Age 4 potentially on the horizon – an assumption that’s been fueled as of late by the approach of 2021’s EA Play Live and the appearance of a Dragon Age 4 file on the PlayStation store – many fans of the series are returning to the original games to refresh their memory or create a new world state before Dragon Age 4‘s release is announced. Others are hoping that the success of BioWare’s Mass Effect Legendary Edition will pave the way for a similar remaster of the Dragon Age franchise, allowing improvements to the game’s combat systems.

There are typically three main character classes to choose from in Dragon Age – mage, warrior, or rogue. Each one is then divided further into specializations, and players have the ability to choose and level up unique combinations of skills throughout the game. The addition of multiple different types of weapons, armors, and out-of-combat abilities such as lockpicking or bashing items helps provide incentive to try out each class at least once. However, when it comes to combat, some Dragon Age classes hold up better than others overall.

Best Dragon Age: Origins Class – Mage

Although rogues are useful for players who are revisiting Dragon Age: Origins – primarily so chests or doors can be unlocked without needing to rely on companions – mage is the most effective class combat-wise. The Arcane Warrior specialization in particular is capable of significant damage, but having easy access to healing abilities for both the player character and team members is beneficial. On higher difficulties, however, the added factor of friendly fire can be seen as a drawback to mages.

Best Dragon Age II Class – Mage

Although mages in Dragon Age 2 arguably don’t have quite as many benefits as the mage builds in Dragon Age: Inquisition or Origins, they still provide players with wide-ranged attacks that can easily clear out fields of enemies without the help of companions. Two-handed warriors are also effective in this regard. The updated combat system seen in Dragon Age 2 also makes the use of magic feel smoother and less tactically-demanding in the eyes of many players.

Best Dragon Age: Inquisition Class – Warrior

Dragon Age: Inquisition is widely considered to be the most balanced game of the series in terms of combat, so the benefits of playing one class over any other are less pronounced than in previous titles. That said, the power of Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s warriors shines in solo combat, more so than rogues or mages. In particular, sword-and-shield Champions are highly defensible, but the all-around versatility found in Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s warrior classes allow for control of the field and high endurance levels regardless of which specializations are chosen.
