When Goku‘s power level reaches 9,000 early in Dragon Ball Z it is appropriately treated like a huge deal, but it barely scratches the surface of how high the Saiyan hero’s power level would reach. Across all forms of Dragon Ball media including anime, manga, and video games, Goku’s power has steadily increased throughout the continuation of Dragon Ball lore. Before reaching the near unfathomable power of a Super Saiyan God and the even more powerful Autonomous Ultra Instinct, Goku’s power far exceeds the then-incomprehensible 9,000-plus to well over 100 million.

Compared to the immense power levels fans are currently witnessing in the Dragon Ball Super manga run, what was once an impressive feat of strength at the very beginning of the saga seems like nothing. During the first major storyline in Dragon Ball, the Emperor Pilaf Saga, Goku’s power level was a mere 10 according to Daizenshuu 7, a collection guide to Dragon Ball. Granted, Goku was just a child throughout the entirety of Dragon Ball. It isn’t until Dragon Ball Z when his power level gets kicked up a notch. When Kakarot’s evil brother Raditz shows up on Earth, Goku reaches a power level of 924, as revealed in Dragon Ball Z Vol. 17 #201 by Akira Toriyama. This is a great improvement from his childhood power level of 10, but far from the extent of Goku’s power.

Once the Saiyan protector of Earth faces off against Nappa and Vegeta, he reaches the famous level of over 9,000 (8,000 in the original Japanese) but goes even a step further when he uses the Kaio-ken technique, multiplying his power by three. This brings Goku to his personal best of over 21,000. While Goku’s progress is astonishing, his power level increases exponentially when he has his planet-destroying battle with Frieza on Namek. Frieza sets the bar incredibly high when he challenges the Z-Fighters for the Namekian Dragon Balls with a base power level of 530,000 as shown in Dragon Ball Z Vol. 24 #286. When fighting Goku, Frieza maxes out his power in his final form, reaching a record-breaking 120 million! However, once Frieza makes the fatal mistake of killing Krillin right in front of the Saiyan, Goku achieves Super Saiyan for the first time and reaches a power level of 150 million, according to Daizenshuu 7.

The fight with Frieza marks the moment when Goku ascends from formidable Earth fighter to one of the strongest beings in the universe. Vegeta crushes his scouter when Kakarot measures over 9,000, and Frieza practically dies when he sees Goku surpasses 90 million. This huge jump in power happens in an extremely short amount of time compared to how long it took Goku to go from a power level of 10 to a power level of nearly 1,000. While Goku’s progress is impressive, it is far from his best.

In the current run of Dragon Ball Super, Goku has surpassed the level of a Super Saiyan God, which, combined with tapping into the power of Autonomous Ultra Instinct, exponentially increases his power level even further. According to some fan sites, this transformation allows him to reach a reported power level of 13.2 septillion! However, the highest power level reported by any official sources is the 150,000,000 Goku achieves when leveling up to Super Saiyan. Since then Goku has battled infinitely-powered androids, a god of destruction, and even more powerful characters, making the this supposed power level of Ultra Instinct, while not confirmed, more than believable. Goku’s highest recorded power level is over 100 million, but his power grows exponentially after each and every Dragon Ball  adventure!
