Warning: contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super: Chapter 78

Throughout Dragon Ball SuperGoku has faced a wide variety of threats with a wide array of abilities, and his latest villain just unlocked the powers of Green Lantern. In the newest chapter of Dragon Ball Super, the villainous Heeters have just achieved their goal of ultimate power, and with the powers of a supercharged Green Lantern, Goku doesn’t stand a chance.

Dragon Ball’s latest arc has seen Goku and Vegeta face off against a man named Granolah who has a vendetta against the Saiyans for destroying his home planet and killing his mother. To defeat them, Granolah wished to become the strongest fighter in the universe. Unbeknownst to Granolah though, he was being used by the mercenary band the Heeters. During Granolah’s battle with Goku and Vegeta, the trio learns the truth that Goku’s father actually saved Granolah and that it was the Heeters who killed his mother. Unfortunately, the realization came too late though, as the Heeters got their hands on the two Dragon Balls necessary to make a wish, and used it to copy Granolah’s wish for their member Gas. Suddenly aged up and stronger than anyone else, Gas’ newfound power gave him the ability to create weapons, possibly, out of energy, that he can now be integrated into his battle form.

Without Hesitation, Gas uses his power to impale Granolah on a spear made of energy. Before Goku can even move, Gas conjures blocks of energy around Goku’s hands and feet, completely immobilizing him. Knowing that the Saiyan has no hope, Gas creates an ax and walks over to finish Goku off once and for all. Granolah lets loose a single energy blast, causing him and Gas to brawl. Though the fight is one-sided, it gives Granolah’s mentor enough time to free Goku and heal him. Goku activates Ultra-Instinct, and though he’s able to fend off some of Gas’ attacks, it’s clear that Goku is absolutely no match. With his ability to create any weapon he can imagine, Gas is almost unstoppable.

Given the weapons made out of energy, it’s not difficult to see Gas’ new powers as a riff on Green Lantern. Gas’s new powers certainly show a number of similarities with those of the Green Lanterns. In DC Comics, Green Lanterns are famous for their ability to create weapons or anything else they can imagine out of green energy. Here, Gas uses that ability to devastating effect, effectively neutralizing Goku and Granolah before either can respond. Even when Goku is using his most powerful form, he fairs a little better, but the raw power of Gas’ weaponry still overwhelms Goku.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Gas is even more threatening than a Green Lantern would be. Gas has no ring that can be removed like the Lanterns, and his power doesn’t need to recharge. With Gas it becomes a true “always-on” superpower. The extent of its capabilities under Gas’ control will likely be further explored in the next chapter. By the look of it, Gas’ new Green Lanterns powers make him the strongest warrior in Dragon Ball Super, and he has no qualms about using that new power to crush Granolah, Vegeta, and Goku.
