While Dragon Ball is known more for martial arts matches than armed battles, there are still a few fabled weapons that show up in the series, including the Z Sword, which the Supreme Kai believes will allow Gohan to defeat Majin Buu. But since Gohan was the only one who could wield the Z Sword, what happened when Future Trunks had to fend off the revival of Majin Buu?

In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Future Trunks returns after the emergence of Goku Black in his timeline, hoping for help from the Z fighters. He alludes to some of the events which took place since his last appearance, including a showdown with Babidi and Dabura that actually prevented Majin Buu’s revival – something that the main timeline clearly didn’t manage. The Dragon Ball Super manga offers a more extensive look at what happened in Future Trunks’ timeline and how he came out on top with the Supreme Kai’s help.

In the manga, Future Trunks is shown training on the world of the Kais to use the Z Sword, just as Gohan did in the primary timeline. Fans will know that the Z Sword actually contained the Elder Kai, who’d been sealed away long ago. Gohan accidentally broke the Z Sword while on the world of the Kais, releasing the Elder Kai, who was in turn able to unleash Gohan’s latent power. Trunks is preparing to pull a similar stunt to the one that broke the primary timeline’s Z Sword until they’re interrupted by an attack on Earth by Dabura. Trunks brings the Z Sword and heads into battle, marking the first time the sword was actually seen used in combat, but Dabura caused it to turn to stone and the blade was shattered.

Oddly, this doesn’t result in the Elder Kai emerging, as it did when Gohan broke it. It’s likely that this turn of events was a result of the Z Sword turning to stone before breaking, but leaving the world of the Kais could also be a factor. Had Trunks broken the Z Sword during his training as Gohan did, it’s likely that the Elder Kai would have appeared like before, providing Trunks and the Supreme Kai with far more options. Trunks could have had his power unlocked like Gohan, or the Elder Kai could have stepped back up to take the role after the current Supreme Kai died in battle against Dabura, preventing the loss of Beerus as well. This one change could’ve radically altered the future timeline’s fate.

Dragon Ball‘s Z Sword has always been a satirical take on the kind of legendary weapons popular in other anime and manga. It’s treated as a big deal, with even gods like the Supreme Kai knowing of its power only through rumor. Yet, despite all the hype, the sword itself is beyond useless, as it’s far too heavy for most people to even move and seemingly quite brittle. The only thing special about it at all was that it was the vessel in which the Elder Kai was sealed, but there doesn’t even seem to be any particular reason why he’s in a sword specifically. In reality, it was little more than an old abandoned tool that had a mythology built around it. While Future Trunks may have seen the Z Sword truly destroyed, he was still able to stop Dabura in a way that Gohan with the sword never did, proving that the blade just wasn’t as special as Dragon Ball Z‘s heroes thought.
