The How To Train Your Dragon series has been a sensation for DreamWorks since the premiere of the hit 2010 film. The franchise, loosely based on the book series of the same name from British author Cressida Powell has spawned countless spin-offs, from video games to tv series, over the past decade, drawing in fans with the charming adventures of Hiccup, the Viking. But it appears Dragons: The Nine Realms is moving away from the established characters of the series and heading into the modern-day.

The new trailer from DreamWorks introduces fans to a new cast of would-be dragon trainers, with Jeremy Shada as Tom Kullersen, joined by Ashley Liao as Jun Wong, Marcus Scribner as D’Angelo Baker, Aimee Garcia as Alexandra Gonzalez, Julia Stiles as Olivia Kullersen, Lauren Tom as May Wong, Keston John as Philip Baker, Justina Machado as Carla Gonzalez, and D’arcy Carden as Linda. When a group of misfit kids arrives at a facility set to study a giant fissure that has opened in the Earth’s crust, they are warned repeatedly to “stay away from the fissure.” But when a curious group member explores the gorge, he slips and falls into the deep void, saved only by a mysterious creature catching him mid-air. The kids go on to discover a party of dragons living deep in the Earth and quickly become their friends and protectors, saying, “We have to keep the secret to protect the dragons.”

Dragons: The Nine Realms takes place 1,300 years after the events of the original How To Train Your Dragon story, at a time when dragons exist only in myth. A group of kids arrives alongside their parents at a new research facility, set up to study a mysterious fissure that has opened as a deep gash in the Earth’s surface. But the curious youths eventually discover that what lies at the bottom of the canyon is a secret worth protecting.

The long-running success of the How To Train Your Dragon series has kept fans enthralled since its introduction in 2010. Dragons: The Nine Realms appearing to step away from the source material and into the modern-day may seem a bold choice, but bringing the franchise into the everyday world seems to open avenues to sustain How To Train Your Dragon for many years to come.
