The new Dual movie trailer sees Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan fighting her own clone to the death. Gillan of course plays the alien Nebula in James Gunn’s MCU movie series based on the Marvel comics title. She’s also known for playing Ruby Roundhouse in the smash hit Jumanji reboot films.

Those franchises have obviously been great for raising Gillan’s profile among fans of genre movies, but the actress indeed has a big presence outside of such blockbuster fare. Last year Gillan in fact tried to establish her own franchise, starring in the all-female assassin movie Gunpowder Milkshake alongside Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett and Lena Headey. It remains to be seen however if Gunpowder Milkshake actually gets a sequel.

While fans wait to find out if Gillan gets to continue her assassin ways in Gunpowder Milkshake 2, the actress has a different movie coming out that itself sees her engaging in a drama with life-or-death stakes. The sci-fi movie Dual stars Gillan as a woman dying of a disease who decides to live on (in a way) by having herself cloned. But things take a big twist when the woman discovers she’s not actually dying, and since there can only be one of her in the world, she now has one year to get herself ready for a battle to the death against her own mirror image. Gillan of course knows all about starring in sci-fi after playing the alien Nebula in multiple MCU efforts not to mention Doctor Who. But Dual is obviously a different, much more grounded and small-scale brand of sci-fi than what is featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. It also looks quite a bit more somber and measured than the wild antics Gillan engages in alongside her co-stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black in the Jumanji films. In addition to Gillan, Dual stars Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame and Theo James of the Divergent series. The film was written and directed by Riley Stearns (The Art of Self-Defense).

The dramatic conflict embodied by having to fight one’s own clone was of course explored previously in Ang Lee’s Will Smith-led action film Gemini Man. But Dual obviously is much more of a character study and not so much an action film. For Gillan the movie is a chance to flex her acting chops playing two characters at once. Dualis set for release exclusively in theaters on April 15, 2022.
