The Promised Neverland manga illustrator, Posuka Demizu, has made a new poster for director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s beloved science-fiction novel, Dune, failed to live up to its source material. Villeneuve’s (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) highly anticipated take on Herbert’s Dune saga kicks off in the United States next month, and its success will determine whether it gets turned into a trilogy. Its star-studded cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, and Javier Bardem.

To prime the uninitiated, the Dune saga begins in the year 10,191 amidst a feudal interstellar society. Dune takes place on the desert planet of Arrakis, which is ruled by House Atreides. The film will follow Chalamet as its protagonist, Paul Atreides, who will someday inherit the mantle of leader from his father, Duke Leto (Isaac). As of this writing, Dune is faring well internationally and has a strong Rotten Tomatoes score, earning a 91% from critics who have praised the blockbuster for its ambition and visuals.

Japanese manga artist, Posuka Demizu, recently created an epic anime-style poster for the Japanese release of Dune on October 15 (via Crunchyroll). The illustration features the film’s main characters on Arrakis with the iconic sandworm in the background. Villeneuve was “truly impressed” by the poster, saying “there is something so special about using gravity in such a dynamic way to enhance the drawing. I think it’s very beautiful and very poetic…it’s very meaningful to me that other artists can draw inspiration from my work and incorporate it into their own. Demizu illustrated the manga series, The Promised Neverland, alongside writer Kaiu Shirai. The series follows Norman, Emma, and Ray, the brightest orphans at the Grace Field House orphanage run by a woman they refer to as “Mama.” After discovering their idyllic life is not what it seems, the group plan to escape the orphanage and venture into the outside world they’ve been forbidden from seeing. The Promised Neverland was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump from August 2016 to June 2020. It was adapted into an anime and broadcast on Fuji TV in January 2019. The series ran for two seasons, ending in March 2021. A live-action series is currently in development at Amazon Studios.

Demizu’s cute style surprisingly seems to suit Dune. As Demizu’s illustration inevitably goes viral, Warner Bros, should consider turning to the artist for future Dune-related promotional material. That being said, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a Dune anime in the future ala The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. If it lives up to the hype, the franchise will continue courtesy of sequels and spinoffs. Dune will release stateside on HBO Max and in theaters on October 22.
