The writers of Dungeons & Dragons don’t just pen brilliant modules and complex adversaries. The various classes that define the game weren’t just arbitrarily chosen but come from ancient character archetypes that can be found throughout literature and legend. Players choose their classes the way that a person might choose a profession or hobby. It’s not only something that’s a source of pleasure but a rewarding pastime for either monetary gain, personal satisfaction, or the needs of the party as a whole.

The signs of the zodiac are also measures of each person’s unique characteristics, so there are some natural parallels between them and the classes that populate the Dungeons & Dragons universe. For those that are avid players of this gaming phenomenon, either in video, book, or tabletop form, it’s an interesting insight into which classes are more common than others. If someone is new to the game and agonizing over which class to chose, they can use their zodiac sign to guide their steps.

Updated on April 18th, 2021 by Kristy Ambrose: The zodiac isn’t confined to the 12 signs. Sometimes, you can have a different horoscope if you were on what’s known as a “cusp” or a narrow window of time when the signs were changing. There’s also the question of your ruling planet, and this can be different from the planet that rules your sign. That means we can take a closer look at D&D classes that fit your star chart perfectly. It’s all about character customization, and an astrological reading can be very specific.

15 Aquarius – Cleric

The Aquarius person is a natural leader, and they are often drawn towards humanitarian causes. Even the evil Clerics of the D&D universe have the same independent spirit, and their energy often carries the rest of the party. They defy limitations with the strength of both body and spirit and are devoted to their chosen companions. The Aquarius is often the moral center of the group, and the Cleric also fills that role.

14 Pisces – Bard

Pisces is among the more musical signs of the zodiac, which is an obvious connection, but there are several more. This is also a deeply intuitive sign, and the Bard is often the member of the party that has to read the party and fill whatever role is needed. The sells of the Bard can be destructive, uplifting, or have healing powers, a versatile trait that’s typical of Pisces.

13 Aries – Ranger

Physical activity, mental endurance, and comfortable clothes are just a few of the things that the Aries person and the Ranger class have in common. Both are honest and courageous, more comfortable using their talents in their home environment than anywhere else, and that can be the forest, a dungeon, or anything in between.

The Aries person is a great multi-tasker and the Ranger class can take on several roles, a reflection of the sign’s flexibility. Rangers are unique in the sense that they can travel alone as well as with a group, and are as accomplished at melee combat as they are with distance weapons.

12 Aries/Taurus Cusp – Barbarian/Druid

This is known as the Cusp of Power and it lasts for four days between April 16th and 22nd. The Aries/Taurus person is all about endurance and leadership, but they also have a generous and sympathetic character. It’s a determined sign that matches this powerful tank perfectly, which is a combination of two classes known for their keen intuitive senses, hardened battle style, and emotional responses. The Druid helps to smooth out the Barbarian’s rougher edges, but this is always going to be someone with their feet on the ground, so to speak.

11 Taurus – Monk

The strength of the Monk lies in their physical power and deep spiritual energy. The sign of Taurus is ruled by similar forces. They are reliable, stable, and responsible, and are happy to lead along with being a part of the team. That isn’t to say that they are entirely humble. A Monk, like the proud Taurus, insists on quality before quantity, but they will be adamant about taking their cut when that treasure cheat opens.

10 Gemini – Druid

A class with the power to shapeshift would have to be connected to the double-sided Gemini, but it’s also the wandering spirit and unrelenting search for knowledge and wisdom that makes the Druid an ideal match for this zodiac sign. They both appreciate the freedom that wandering in the wilds provides, with a group or alone. The faith the Druids follow is an ancient one, an ideal match for the eternally curious, adaptable, and gentle Gemini person.

9 Cancer – Paladin

The Paladin isn’t the only class that leans heavily on tradition and fraternity, but these dedicated holy warriors look to the past and embrace ancient rituals as part of their identity. They are essentially Clerics that carry swords, dedicated to protection and service, and the Cancer is irrevocably drawn to them.

Cancer is one of the most traditional signs of the zodiac, revering honor, family, and faith, which could also describe the average Paladin. They are also guarded people, who would prefer to let their actions speak for them and keep their personal lives a secret while serving the community.

8 Cancer/Leo Cusp – Paladin/Bard

This sign has a flair for drama, a keen intuition, and is absolutely gorgeous. They’re also known for their flair for both physical and emotional activity. That fits well with the gregarious and protective Paladin/Bard multiclass. If you want to be the face of your party in social situations along with protecting them in fighting situations, this is your character. You also get a lot of nice gear and gain certain talents and abilities depending on your alignment and religious order, and both Cancer and Leo appreciate nice things.

7 Leo – Sorcerer

The Leo person is born naturally talented and beautiful, and the Sorcerer class is similarly gifted. This class didn’t study magic or choose a higher entity to serve but was gifted with innate talents. Both the Leo and the Sorcerer class are highly charismatic, often the center of attention socially or in an adventuring party, with for their stunning looks or amazing powers.

6 Virgo – Wizard

Virgo is the sign of academia, embodied in the dedicated and lonely Wizard who dedicates his life to their field of study. A practical and hardworking Virgo person would make an excellent Wizard. This sign also likes the great outdoors, so don’t let that bookish demeanor fool other players. This nerdy magic-user actually makes a good traveler and will go almost anywhere if it means refining their knowledge.

5 Libra – Rogue

The Rogue isn’t seen as a complex class, but on the other hand, it’s incredibly versatile for players that want to multi-class or dual-class their characters or play a protagonist with a complex backstory and an unstable moral alignment. They can be played like fighters, with more overt melee talents like a pirate, or as stealthy but deadly assassins. The Libra is the sign that searches for balance, which makes the Rogue class an interesting one from both a game-mechanics and role-playing viewpoint.

4 Scorpio – Fighter

Determined and dependable, the Scorpio is the sign that the party nominates to lead their way through the dangerous parts of their adventure. Their dedication means that they are the best at their chosen profession, and the ideal person to be guarding a party’s lives.

The Fighter class is a versatile one, that’s often a multi-class or dual-class character, and the resourceful Scorpio will likely build an OP protagonist anyway. The Scorpio will not only build a complex fighter but will spend more time than other signs researching D&D lore to get their character’s backstory right.

3 Sagittarius – Barbarian

Here’s the sign that loves the great outdoors, and the first thing players notice about a Barbarian is the preference for the rugged and epic outdoor life. It’s not just the thrill of being free of worldly constraints, but the possibility of adventure and philosophy that brings the Archer sign to the gaming table. The Sagittarius likewise hates to be constrained, perhaps not so much to send them into a Berserker rage, but the potential is there.

2 Capricorn Ruled By Venus – Life Domain Cleric

Not everyone born under a certain sign is ruled by the planet that usually dominates that sign. The planets and stars are always moving, and if you were born in the sign of Capricorn when Venus was moving through the sign, that means that you have the charm, warmth, and vitality that Capricorns usually don’t. Combine the traits of Venus with Capricorn and the result is a dedicated healer, so the natural choice for a class is the Cleric.

1 Capricorn – Warlock

A Warlock doesn’t get their power from a god, a book, an ancestor, or an unusual accident. They negotiate with a more powerful human entity than themselves, often a god or demon. Nobody else could pull that off except for the steely-willed Capricorn, who rules the concepts of time and responsibility. Only the zodiac’s master of self-control can make a deal with a devil.
