The Dancing With the Stars alums Sharna Burgess and Brian Austin Green are in a relationship, and their romance may have played a role in how far they got in the competition this season. In the past, cast members have gotten involved in showmances by beginning to date their dance parters while competing on the show. This season, Sharna and Brian were already an item before agreeing to dance together during season 30.

Before the cast was revealed for the milestone season of the dancing competition, Sharna and Brian had been dating for a little less than one year. Brian was previously married to actress Megan Fox, with whom he shares three sons. When rumors began to swirl regarding who would be cast for Dancing With the Stars season 30, many fans assumed that Brian would be paired with Sharna if he was added to the show. To no one’s surprise, this dancing duo was revealed on premiere night back in September. Since then, Sharna and Brian have brought the romance to the ballroom week after week.

While many fans may argue that Sharna and Brian were at an advantage in the dancing competition due to their personal relationship, their love may have actually negatively impacted their success on the show. During the two-part Disney Night earlier this week, a pair of dancing couples were eliminated from the competition, and one of those duos was Brian and Sharna. Throughout their four-week run on the show, Sharna and Brian received major backlash from fans and judges due to their constant PDA (public display of affection) while in the ballroom. Following their Snow White-themed performance on Monday night, head judge Len Goodman scolded the lack of dancing and the overabundance of affection.

Sharna and Brian are madly in love, and their strong feelings for each other were hard to hide in the ballroom. It became difficult for the two hopeless romantics to find a balance between their personal relationship and their dancing relationship. While intimacy and affection can actually be beneficial for certain ballroom dances, Sharna and Brian may have taken the romance too far during their performances. Sharna had previously admitted that there were actually many challenges to dancing alongside Brian, such as finding a balance between rehearsal time and time at home.

There is debate as to whether or not Sharna and Brian’s relationship helped or hurt them on the show. However, it is fair to say that their never-ending PDA could have cost them the Mirrorball  Trophy. Had they toned down the affection within their performances, the judges might have given them higher scores based on their dancing skills alone. This would have ultimately allowed them to stay in the competition longer than they did.

Dancing With the Starsairs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
