DWTS: Peta Admits She Almost Sent Maks ‘Goodbye Text’ Amid Ukraine Crisis

Dancing With The Stars pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd has admitted being overcome with fear while her husband, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, was stuck in Ukraine amid Russia’s attacks. When Maksim was in Ukraine, he did his best to spread awareness about his home country’s situation amid the Russian government attacks. Despite the tense situation at the time, Maksim posted Instagram videos that showed the country’s troubled state.

The choreographer was deeply concerned for the people’s lives and detailed the traumatic conditions citizens were living in and the difficulties they experienced in their bid to escape the country. Many viewers were worried about Maksim’s life, while his wife Peta was devastated by her husband’s situation. Peta did not hide her distress and took to social media to post a lengthy note in which she pleaded for prayers. Thankfully, Maksim made it back safely shortly after Peta’s public plea, and naturally, she was at the airport to meet him.

Maksim has been home with his wife for months now, but that hasn’t been enough to wash away the hurtful memories of watching Maksim struggle in Ukraine. During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Peta got emotional as she recalled Maksim’s escape from Ukraine. Peta said, “To get the phone call and to call him and see him frantically packing his bags, trying to get out of the hotel. I had a heart attack nearly.” Despite being an emotional mess at the time, Peta had to remain strong for her husband. She also confessed that the next eight days he spent in Ukraine were “Absolutely life-changing.” As the interview progressed, Peta teared up as she explained that she almost sent Maksim a goodbye message, “I literally wrote him a text, almost a goodbye text if something happens. Don’t make me cry.”

Maksim later chimed in, explaining that he believed he was stuck in Ukraine to help spread the news about the attacks. The DWTS ballroom dancer said, “It happened for a reason. Who but us to do this on a bigger level and then bring more awareness?” Since escaping his home country, the TV star has led different charitable efforts to aid Ukrainian refugees. He has also continued to share what Ukrainian citizens have experienced since the attacks.

The Dancing With The Stars couple has had several tumultuous situations since the first attack on Ukraine. Seeing Maksim stuck in a chaotic situation was tough for Peta, but thankfully she did not have to send a goodbye text to her husband. Maksim and Peta’s story mirrors so many other Ukrainians who have been affected by the tensions between their country and Russia. Hopefully, like Peta and Maksim, many of those stuck in the conflict will finally reunite with their loved ones and try to create new and beautiful memories afterward. Meanwhile, kudos to the couple for continuing with their efforts to provide relief to the war’s refugees. One hopes that their efforts and that of many others will continue to bear fruit, and the conflict will finally come to an end soon.
